Chapter 3 - The Cold War in the Boardroom**

The morning after the disastrous dinner at Le Pavillon, the executive boardroom on the thirty-eighth floor of the Bennett Tower felt less like a place of business and more like a death row waiting room.

The heavy mahogany double doors were locked from the inside.

Daniel sat at the center of the executive table, his bespoke Italian suit looking suddenly too large for his trembling frame. His hair was disheveled, dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes, and his hands shook visibly as he stared at the financial printouts scattered across the polished wood.

Beside him sat Arthur Vance, our chief corporate legal counsel, looking violently green.

And standing near the floor-to-ceiling windows, wearing a massive ice pack taped to the side of her swollen, bruised face, was Madison Blake. She wasn't wearing her expensive silver dress today; instead, she wore a tight black turtleneck meant to hide the lingering mark of my hand, though nothing could hide the sheer, unmitigated terror in her eyes.

The private elevator chime pinged softly down the hall.

The heavy doors swung open, and I walked into the boardroom, flanked by two senior partners from Sterling & Sterling Forensic Law—the most feared white-collar litigation firm on the Eastern Seaboard—carrying heavy steel-reinforced briefcases.

I didn't sit down. I walked straight to the head of the table, pulling out the primary executive chair—Daniel’s chair—and sat down with an air of absolute, chilling authority.

“Let’s dispense with the pleasantries,” I said, my voice cutting through the heavy silence like ice water. “Arthur, have you had a chance to review the supplemental audit package?”

Arthur swallowed hard, sliding his glasses down his nose and looking pleadingly at Daniel before answering. “Mrs. Bennett... yes. I’ve reviewed the ledgers. The... the twelve million in unauthorized transfers from the restricted reserve accounts to Sapphire Holdings LLC... it’s all documented. Every single wire transfer.”

Daniel snapped his head up, glaring at his lawyer in blind panic. “Arthur! Whose side are you on? You work for Bennett Group!”

“Mr. Bennett,” Arthur said quietly, refusing to meet his eyes, “I am general counsel for the corporate entity and the primary family trust. And under federal law, when a managing executive systematically loots restricted trust capital, my legal duty shifts immediately to the trustees. Which means... I work for Mrs. Bennett.”

Madison stepped forward from the window, her voice nasal and trembling with indignation. “This is ridiculous! You can’t just walk in here and bully everyone with fake numbers just because you’re throwing a jealous tantrum over last night! Daniel is the CEO! He built this company!”

I slowly turned my head, fixing my gaze on Madison with a look so cold she physically stepped backward, whimpering.

“Madison,” I said softly, “do you know what the penalty is in the state of New York for aiding and abetting corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and money laundering using interstate commerce?”

She opened her mouth, but no words came out.

“It’s up to twenty years in a federal penitentiary,” I continued, opening my briefcase and pulling out a crisp, federal indictment draft. “And seeing as every single shell corporation you and your brother set up to receive those stolen funds has your digital signature stamped right on the incorporation documents... you aren't just an assistant anymore. You’re the primary co-conspirator.”

Madison turned the color of chalk. She looked desperately at Daniel. “Daniel, tell her! Do something! Make her stop!”

Daniel looked at Madison, then looked at me, and in that split second, his cowardice truly revealed itself. He didn't defend her. He didn't try to protect her. He simply slumped back into his chair, defeated, realizing that his mistress was just as disposable to him as he thought I was.

“What do you want, Claire?” Daniel whispered, his voice broken and hollow.

“I want everything,” I replied without blinking. “Every share of stock. Every real estate asset purchased with corporate funds. Every subsidiary under Bennett Group transferred directly into the family trust. And as for you two...”

I slid two separate manila envelopes across the table.

“Option A: You sign these voluntary resignation, asset-forfeiture, and guilty plea cooperation agreements right now, and I might consider recommending lenience to the U.S. Attorney’s office.”

“And Option B?” Daniel breathed shakily.

I smiled—a cold, razor-sharp smile.

“Option B is where my forensic team walks out of this room, hands these files directly to the FBI task force waiting in the lobby downstairs, and you spend the next two decades sharing adjoining prison cells while the federal government strips every penny you've ever touched.”

May you like

The room fell into absolute stillness. The only sound was the harsh, ragged breathing of two people who had built an empire on lies, arrogance, and cruelty, only to discover that the queen they tried to overthrow owned the entire board.
