Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses**

Panic, raw and unadulterated, finally broke through Mark’s polished corporate facade. He realized in that single, crushing second that this wasn't just a family inheritance dispute—it was an orchestrated, legally airtight execution.
“You’re bluffing,” Mark stammered, backing away from the table as if the papers on it were infected. “There’s nothing in those files. My offshore accounts are encrypted through shell companies in the Caymans. Federal investigators couldn't crack them in a decade!”
“Federal investigators didn't need a decade,” a deep, authoritative voice echoed from the doorway of the vestry.
The heavy oak door swung open, and two men in dark suits stepped into the room, flashing federal badges bearing the gold seal of the United States Department of Justice and the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division.
Special Agent Thomas Vance stepped forward, looking directly at Mark.
“Mark Sterling,” Agent Vance stated crisply, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. “You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, money laundering, and tax evasion exceeding twelve million dollars.”
Mark’s knees buckled. He grabbed the edge of the vestry table to keep from collapsing, his chest heaving as he stared frantically from the federal agents to me.
“Valerie... please,” he whispered, his voice cracking, the arrogant corporate executive instantly transforming into a terrified, pathetic coward. “Call them off! We’ve been married for twenty years! You can’t do this to me! Think of our life together!”
“I spent twenty years thinking about our life together, Mark,” I replied coldly, looking down at him without a shred of pity. “You spent them plotting behind my back, embezzling your mother’s fortune, and treating me like an unpaid servant while you funded your little mistress in downtown penthouses.”
Mark froze. The color drained completely from his face.
“You... you knew about Chloe?” he breathed, horrified.
“I knew about Chloe, I knew about the offshore accounts, and I knew about the fake business trips to Chicago,” I said, stepping closer until I was inches away from him. “Your mother knew about them, too. That’s why she spent her final months helping me build this case against you. Every time you thought you were outsmarting the world, Margaret was sitting quietly in her room, documenting every single transaction, every lie, and every dollar you stole.”
Agent Vance stepped forward, grabbing Mark firmly by both arms.
“Let’s go, Mr. Sterling,” the agent commanded, snapping the cold steel cuffs securely around Mark’s wrists.
As they hauled him backward toward the exit, Mark let out a furious, hysterical scream of rage, thrashing against the federal agents.
“You ruined me!” he shrieked, his voice echoing off the stone chapel walls as he was dragged past the horrified whispers of lingering funeral guests. “You’ll get nothing! I’ll make sure you get nothing!”
“He’s the one who’s getting nothing,” Richard Vance noted calmly, adjusting his glasses as the heavy oak doors clicked shut behind them.

I stood alone in the center of the vestry, looking down at the flash drive in my hand. The nightmare was finally over. The man who thought he could use, discard, and betray everyone who ever loved him had walked right into the trap his own mother had set.
