Chapter 3 - The Trap Reverses**

Vanessa froze, her eyes darting toward the main loading bay doors where Victor’s silhouette was advancing through the dim lighting. She looked back down at me, her jaw set with absolute steel.

“He thinks you’re a block of ice by now,” Vanessa whispered fiercely, her voice trembling with adrenaline. “He came back to tidy up the crime scene and establish his alibi. Stay quiet, Clara. Let me handle this lying bastard.”

She gently lowered me onto a pallet stacked with insulated shipping blankets, shielding my body from view behind a towering stack of medical crates. I clutched my stomach, biting my lower lip until it bled to suppress my screams as another contraction rolled through me.

Victor stepped into the staging area, wearing a carefully crafted expression of deep grief and shock. He held a handkerchief to his dry eyes, putting on an Oscar-worthy performance of a devastated husband.

“Oh, God... Clara? Please tell me she’s not...” Victor cried out, his voice echoing in the cavernous warehouse. He stopped dead in his tracks as he spotted Vanessa standing by the open vault door, casually wiping frost off her hands with a rag.

Victor’s fake tears vanished instantly. His face went pale as a ghost.

“Vanessa?” he stammered, taking a nervous step backward. “What... what are you doing here? Where is my wife?”

Vanessa stepped out from the shadows, slowly walking toward him with a terrifying, predatory calm. The crowbar still rested in her hand, gleaming menacingly under the flickering overhead lights.

“Looking for a little inventory check, Victor,” Vanessa said, her voice dripping with venom. “Funny thing about this warehouse security system—it doesn't just record override codes. It also records remote door-locking commands transmitted from external mobile devices.”

Victor’s throat bobbed as he swallowed hard. He tried to maintain his composure, forcing a weak, defensive laugh. “I... I don't know what you’re talking about. The cooling system failed, and she must have gotten trapped accidentally.”

“Accidentally?” Vanessa’s voice rose sharply, echoing off the concrete walls. “Is that what you told the life insurance broker when you finalized that twenty-four-million-dollar policy last month? Or is that what you told your mistress, Chloe, when you promised her you’d finally pay off your multi-million-dollar gambling debts with my dead colleague’s blood?”

Victor flinched as if he’d been physically struck. The mention of Chloe—his secret girlfriend and high-stakes gambling partner—shattered his last remaining shred of denial.

“You... you’re bluffing,” Victor hissed, his mask of innocence peeling away to reveal the desperate, vicious monster underneath. He lunged forward, reaching into his jacket pocket for something heavy and metallic. “You shouldn't have stuck your nose where it doesn't belong, Vanessa.”

Before Victor could pull a weapon from his coat, Vanessa swung the heavy iron crowbar with precise, devastating fury, catching him squarely across the shins. Victor let out a shriek of agony, collapsing hard onto the concrete floor.
