Chapter 3 - The Siege of the Safe House

The commotion in the grand foyer escalated into the heavy thud of boots and the sharp clicking of weapon safeties. Declan didn't flinch. He gestured sharply to two of his elite guards stationed in the hallway.
"Take Nadia and Paloma to the panic room on the third floor," Declan ordered, his voice brooking no argument.
"No," Nadia said immediately, standing up despite the sharp pain in her bruised hip. "I'm not hiding. Renato thinks he can hunt me down wherever I go. I need to see him fall."
"Listen to me," Declan stepped closer, his presence commanding absolute obedience. "This isn't about bravery; this is about strategy. You are safe here. Let me handle the pieces on the board."
Before Nadia could argue further, the heavy parlor doors blew open. Standing in the threshold was Renato Vega, flanked by four armed municipal enforcers wearing tactical vests and carrying unauthorized firearms. Renato’s face was flushed with frantic panic and arrogant rage. His expensive suit was rumpled, and his eyes bulged as he spotted Nadia standing beside the most feared man in the city.
"Nadia, you stupid bitch!" Renato screamed, raising a pistol toward her. "You think running away to some gangster's mansion is going to save you? You're coming home right now, or—"
Renato never finished his sentence.
With blinding speed, Declan drew his sidearm and fired a single, deafening shot that shattered the crystal chandelier directly above Renato's head. Cascading glass rained down like diamonds, while Declan’s personal guards flooded the room from the side corridors, their automatic weapons instantly trained on Renato’s terrified crew.
The four enforcers dropped their weapons within two seconds, recognizing the tactical suicide of challenging Declan Marsh on his own turf. Renato froze, the color draining entirely from his face as the barrel of Declan’s gun locked dead onto the center of his forehead.
"Drop the weapon, Renato," Declan’s voice was a lethal whisper that cut through the silence of the room.
Trembling violently, Renato let the pistol slip from his sweating fingers, clattering loudly against the hardwood floor. He dropped to his knees, his arrogant bravado instantly melting into pathetic sniveling.
"Mr. Marsh... please," Renato stammered, raising his hands defensively. "This is a domestic matter! She’s my wife—my ex-wife! She stole my daughter! You don't understand—"
Nadia stepped forward from behind Declan, her posture rigid, her eyes burning with a righteous fury that had been suppressed for years. "I am not your property, Renato," she said, her voice steady and echoing through the grand room. "You tried to murder me on the highway in broad daylight. You thought my silence was guaranteed by your family's corrupt badge."
Declan kept his weapon trained on Renato while signaling Otis to secure the four enforcers. "You crossed into the wrong territory, Vega," Declan stated coldly. "You didn't just assault a citizen; you violated the unwritten law of men who protect what is sacred."
Renato looked frantically around the room, realizing that his political connections meant absolutely nothing inside this fortress. "My brother-in-law is the Assistant DA! He'll indict you all! He'll shut down your operations!"
At that exact moment, the double doors swung open again, and Marcus stepped inside, holding a glowing tablet. He walked briskly over to Declan and handed over the device.
Declan glanced at the screen, a chilling smirk touching the corners of his mouth. He looked down at the cowering Renato.
"Your brother-in-law, Thomas Vance, won't be indicting anyone today, Renato," Declan said smoothly. "In fact, federal agents just raided his office ten minutes ago. He’s currently being booked for bribery, extortion, and laundering municipal funds. Your father’s infrastructure commission has been dissolved pending a federal corruption probe. Your entire empire evaporated while you drove over here to play tough guy."

Renato collapsed completely onto the floor, sobbing uncontrollably as the terrifying magnitude of his ruin crashed down upon him.
Declan motioned to his guards. "Take him down to the lower holding cells. Strip him of everything. Let him contemplate gravity from a very different perspective."
