Chapter 3 - The Web of Deception

The kitchen felt suddenly freezing, as if the walls had turned to ice. Every tender memory I had cherished of Luke—our late-night talks in the cramped campus apartment, his gentle touch, his whispered promises of forever—shattered into a million jagged, useless pieces.
It was all a lie.
Every single smile, every touch, every declaration of love had been a calculated extraction by a man trained to harvest what his family’s empire demanded.
"No," I sobbed, clutching Brucie so tightly against my chest that she stirred and let out a soft, sleepy whimper. I instantly loosened my grip, rocking her gently while tears poured uncontrollably down my cheeks. "How could he do that? If he was hunting me... if he was supposed to take me or the baby... why didn't he? Why did he disappear the night I told him I was pregnant?"
Bruno walked around the table, pulling out a chair and sitting down heavily across from me. He reached out, his warm, calloused hand covering mine where it rested on the table.
"Because when you told him you were pregnant, Clover, something changed in him," Bruno said softly. "For months, he was playing a part. He was reporting back to his grandfather’s syndicate, gathering data, preparing to bring you into their facility under the guise of specialized prenatal care. But living with you... loving you in that little apartment... he fell for his own trap. He fell in love with you."
I stared at him, my heart aching with a hollow, burning agony. "Then why did he run? If he loved me, why did he leave us with nothing?"
"Because the night you told him the test was positive, Luke received a call from his grandfather," Bruno explained, pointing to a phone log printed out in the bottom of the metal box. "Arthur Sterling told him that the board had authorized extraction—that whether you consented or not, the child was to be brought to the corporate research facility the moment it was born to undergo chromosomal mapping."
My stomach heaved. I gripped the edge of the table.
"Luke realized what his family was going to do to his own child," Bruno continued, his eyes fierce with conviction. "He knew that if he stayed, his grandfather would tear your life apart. So he did the only thing he could think of to save you and the baby. He burned his entire life to the ground in a single night. He emptied his bank accounts, destroyed his lab credentials, smashed his phone, and vanished off the grid to throw the Sterling security teams off his scent."
The revelation washed over me like a tidal wave of conflicting terror and profound grief.
Luke hadn't abandoned us out of cowardice. He had run away to become a ghost, drawing the hunters away from our door, leaving himself completely unprotected so that we could live in safety.
"Where is he now?" I whispered, my voice cracking into a desperate plea. "Grandpa, if he ran to protect us... where is Luke?"
Bruno’s face darkened, a heavy shadow falling across his features. He reached back into the metal box and pulled out a single, fresh envelope that had no postmark. It was sealed with heavy red wax bearing an unfamiliar corporate crest.
"He isn't missing anymore, Clover," Bruno said grimly. "Two days ago—just hours after Brucie was born in that hospital—this letter was left on my front porch by an anonymous courier."
He slid the letter toward me.
I looked at the handwritten address. It was written in the exact same sweeping, elegant cursive as my mother’s letters.

Except the sender’s name written on the back flap was signed in a hand I would recognize anywhere: Dr. Lucas Sterling.
