Chapter 4 - The Trap Springs Shut at the Altar

The minister, sweating slightly under the oppressive tension radiating from the groom, cleared his throat and opened his leather-bound Bible.

“Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today in the sight of God and these witnesses to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony…”

The traditional words echoed through the cavernous ballroom, sounding hollow and surreal against the silent, suffocating backdrop of the room. The guests smiled warmly, completely oblivious to the ticking time bomb unfolding right before their eyes.

Vanessa kept her hand locked in Daniel’s, though a flicker of unease finally crossed her features. She noticed how stiff his posture was. She noticed how his eyes lacked any warmth whatsoever.

“Daniel?” she whispered under her breath, tilting her head with a confused, fragile smile. “Is everything alright? You look pale.”

“Everything has never been more clear, Vanessa,” Daniel replied evenly, his voice steady and cold.

The minister finished the opening remarks and reached the crucial turning point of the ceremony.

“If any man here present can show just cause why they may not be lawfully joined together, let him speak now, or else hereafter forever hold his peace.”

Silence hung heavily in the air.

Vanessa let out a quiet sigh of relief, tightening her grip on Daniel’s hand, thinking she had successfully crossed the finish line. She turned toward the minister, ready to say her vows.

“I do,” she chimed happily when prompted.

The minister turned to Daniel. “And do you, Daniel Sterling, take this woman to be your lawful wedded wife, to live together in holy estate—?”

“No,” Daniel said clearly.

The single word cut through the ballroom like a razor blade.

The minister blinked in utter shock, dropping his book slightly. The string quartet stopped playing mid-note. A collective gasp rippled through the hundreds of seated guests, turning into a chaotic wave of anxious murmurs.

Vanessa’s face drained of all color, turning the shade of freshly fallen snow. Her eyes widened in absolute panic.

“Daniel? What are you—what kind of joke is this?!” she stammered, forcing a fragile, hysterical laugh as she looked out at the stunned crowd. “Ha-ha, very funny, honey, but let’s not ruin the ceremony—”

“It’s not a joke, Vanessa,” Daniel interrupted, his voice ringing out with terrifying authority across the silent room.

He slowly pulled his hand out of hers as if touching her burned him. He reached into his tuxedo jacket, pulled out a thick, legal-bound document, and dropped it heavily onto the velvet-covered altar table right in front of the horrified bride.

“This is a comprehensive forensic audit of your previous three marriages, your offshore shell corporations in the Cayman Islands, and the wire-fraud scheme you orchestrated to infiltrate my company,” Daniel announced, his voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers.

Vanessa staggered backward, her gorgeous wedding gown tangling around her heels. “You’re insane! You’re lying! Prove it—!”

“I don’t need to prove it,” a calm, authoritative voice called out from the center aisle.

Agent Vance stepped forward from the shadows of the wedding party, pulling his federal badge from his breast pocket and holding it high for the entire room to see.

“Vanessa Cole, alias Victoria Vance, alias Veronica Sterling,” Agent Vance recited loudly. “You are under federal arrest for interstate wire fraud, identity theft, financial racketeering, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny.”

Chaos erupted in the ballroom.

Guests jumped out of their seats, screaming and gasping, pulling out their phones to record the unimaginable spectacle.

Across the room, Julian Cross—realizing the trap had sprung—panicked, turned on his heel, and sprinted blindly toward the side exit doors.

He didn't make it three steps.

Two tactical federal agents burst through the side doors, tackling Julian violently to the marble floor, slamming steel handcuffs onto his wrists amidst a shower of shattered champagne flutes.

Back at the altar, Vanessa shrieked like a trapped animal. She tried to lift the heavy skirts of her designer wedding dress and bolt down the center aisle, but Agent Vance intercepted her with practiced ease, twisting her arms behind her back with cold, mechanical efficiency.

*CLACK.*

The heavy steel handcuffs locked around Vanessa’s slender wrists, biting savagely into the expensive lace cuffs of her wedding gown.

“You can’t do this to me! Do you know who I am?! My husband is a billionaire!” Vanessa screamed hysterically, thrashing against the federal agents as they dragged her down the altar steps, her immaculate hair coming undone and her veil trailing behind her like a tattered ghost.

“Your husband is currently filing for an emergency annulment and freezing every cent of your stolen assets,” Daniel called out coldly from the altar, watching her dragged away in absolute silence.

As Vanessa was hauled out of the double doors, screaming obscenities that echoed down the hotel hallway, the ballroom descended into a stunned, breathless quiet.

Margaret stood up from the front pew, letting out a long, trembling breath she felt like she had been holding for an entire year. She looked down at Lily, who was smiling—a bright, beautiful, carefree smile that hadn't graced the little girl's face since her mother passed away.

The nightmare was finally over.
