Chapter 4 - The Tables Turn

Arthur stood up so fast his chair screeched loudly against the hardwood floor. "What is he looking at? Marcus, what does that paper say? Give it here! That house is ours! We already called the real estate agent!"

Marcus Vance allowed a very faint, almost imperceptible smile to touch the corners of his mouth. He snapped his briefcase shut with a crisp click.

"I'm afraid not, Arthur," Marcus said smoothly, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. "Under the terms of Evelyn Vance’s amended trust, your niece Sarah holds a bare legal title with zero possession rights. Caleb is the lawful master of the residence. If you set foot on that property without his express permission, it will be considered trespassing, and my office will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law."

Sarah’s face flushed a violent, mottled crimson. She slammed her hands down on the table, her voice rising to a shrill, hysterical shriek. "You're lying! You rigged the will! He’s a grifter! A homeless bum who manipulated an old lady!"

"He may have started out trying to manipulate her," Marcus said calmly, walking toward the door, "but Evelyn spent five years turning him into a son. Good afternoon, Mr. Miller."

With that, Marcus turned and walked out of the conference room, leaving me alone with two furious, sputtering relatives who suddenly realized they had inherited nothing more than a legal nightmare.

I slowly stood up, placing the letters, the receipts, and the bank statement back into the shoebox. I didn't yell. I didn't gloat. I simply looked at Sarah, whose eyes were wide with blind panic as she realized her payday had just evaporated into thin air.

"You can't do this!" Sarah screamed, lunging across the table toward me. "That’s our family home! You tricked her!"

May you like

"No," I said, my voice steady, carrying a quiet, unshakeable strength I didn't know I possessed. "She didn't trick me. She saved me. And you are trespassing."

I tucked the shoebox securely under my arm, turned my back on them, and walked out of the office into the warm afternoon sunlight.
