Chapter 3 - The Disappearing Wife and the Legal Counter-Strike**

While I spent the next three days recovering in a quiet, sunlit private room in Pennsylvania, safely cocooned by my sister’s fierce protection and the hospital’s security protocols, total chaos was erupting back in Columbus, Ohio.
On Thursday morning, Derek arrived home from his high-society client dinner expecting to find me nursing contractions on the living room rug or quietly waiting for him to return. Instead, he found an empty house, an unmade bed, and his fifteen dollars sitting right beside two wedding rings on the kitchen counter.
Panic, wounded ego, and corporate paranoia quickly set in.
Afraid that my disappearance would disrupt his pristine public image and jeopardize his impending promotion to senior vice president at his logistics firm, Derek didn't call the police to report me missing. Instead, he hired a ruthless private investigator named Marcus Vance to track me down, convinced I was hiding out at a local women's shelter to spite him.
He had no idea what was actually waiting for him.
On the fourth day after Emily’s birth, there was a soft knock on my hospital room door. A tall, impeccably dressed woman with sharp features and a tailored charcoal blazer walked in, flashing a warm, professional smile.
“Are you Clara Miller?” she asked, stepping inside.
“I am,” I replied warily, shifting Emily slightly in my arms. “Who are you?”
The woman pulled a polished leather portfolio from her briefcase and introduced herself. “My name is Samantha Reed. I’m a senior partner at Reed & Associates Family Law in Pittsburgh, and I specialize in high-conflict domestic litigation and asset protection.”
I stared at her in surprise. “Who sent you? Rachel?”
“Your sister called my emergency hotline two nights ago,” Samantha explained smoothly, pulling up a chair beside my bed. “She told me everything about your husband, his financial control, the emotional abuse, and the fact that you fled across state lines while in active labor. Clara, you did the bravest thing you could possibly do. But now, we go on the offensive.”
Samantha opened her portfolio, spreading out a series of financial audits, mortgage deeds, and corporate bank statements.
“Your husband assumes that because the house and cars are in his name, he holds all the cards,” Samantha continued, a confident smirk playing on her lips. “He forgot about federal interstate marital property laws. Furthermore, while your private investigator husband was frantically searching for you, my firm subpoenaed your joint corporate accounts.”
My eyes widened. “What did you find?”
“We found that Derek hasn't just been hoarding household funds,” Samantha revealed, tapping a highlighted forensic accounting report. “For the past three years, he has been systematically siphoning company development funds into secret offshore accounts to prepare for a quiet divorce on his own terms—abandoning you before you even realized it. By leaving the house with your wedding rings left behind as formal notification of abandonment and constructive eviction, you legally triggered an emergency asset freeze.”

Samantha leaned forward, her eyes locking onto mine with fierce determination. “Your husband thinks he can treat you like garbage and throw you fifteen dollars. By tomorrow morning, his corporate accounts will be frozen by federal mandate, his CEO will be notified of his embezzlement, and he won't even be able to afford a cup of coffee, let alone a high-priced lawyer.”
