Chapter 3 - The Confrontation at Dawn**

By 6:00 AM, the early morning light was just beginning to pierce the horizon as Marcus and two county sheriff deputies met us outside the hospital discharge wing. Maya was bundled up in a warm tracksuit Marcus had brought, holding a cup of hot chamomile tea. She was still quiet, her eyes darting nervously around the parking lot as if expecting Richard to materialize out of the shadows. I held her hand tightly, letting her feel the absolute anchor of my presence.
Instead of heading home, Marcus led our small convoy straight toward Richard’s upscale gated community. "We need to secure her personal belongings, school laptop, and medical records before he realizes we’re launching a full-scale legal assault," Marcus explained from the driver's seat. "And more importantly, we need to catch him before he has time to wipe his home computers of the communication records between him and Patricia regarding how they planned to isolate Maya."
When we pulled into Richard’s driveway, the house looked deceptively peaceful, the morning sprinklers hissing across the emerald-green lawn. But the moment Marcus stepped out of the vehicle and rapped his knuckles sharply against the front door, the illusion of suburban perfection shattered instantly.
The heavy oak door swung open, and Richard appeared wearing an expensive silk bathrobe, a scowl already twisting his features. Behind him hovered Patricia, clutching a coffee mug and looking intensely annoyed.
*"Sarah? What the hell is this?"* Richard barked, stepping onto the porch. His eyes flicked to Marcus and the two uniformed deputies standing at the edge of the driveway. "Are you seriously bringing cops to my house over a minor disciplinary grounding? Where is Maya?"
*"Maya is safe,"* I stepped out of the car, my voice carrying a terrifying, unnatural calm that made Richard pause. "And she is never stepping foot in this house again, Richard."
*"Don't be ridiculous,"* Patricia chimed in from the doorway, her voice dripping with condescension. "The girl threw a massive temper tantrum because we took away her screen privileges. You’re coddling her, Sarah, exactly like you always did during our marriage. That’s why she’s so disrespectful."
Marcus stepped forward, flashing a gold badge and slipping a heavy stack of legal documents out of his leather portfolio. "Richard Vance, Patricia Vance, you are both formally served with emergency ex parte restraining orders, a criminal subpoena for child endangerment, and a warrant to search and seize electronic storage devices related to ongoing abuse investigations."
Richard’s face drained of color in a single heartbeat. The arrogant, untouchable posture evaporated, replaced by a sudden, frantic panic. "Abuse? Are you out of your mind?! That’s a complete fabrication! This is a bitter divorce retaliation—"

*"Is it a fabrication, Richard?"* I interrupted, pulling the folded notebook paper from my pocket and holding it up so the morning sun caught the ink. "Is forgetting to feed her a fabrication? Is locking her out in a freezing downpour until she passed out a fabrication? Or should I play the neighborhood security footage for the deputies right now that shows you watching her collapse through your living room window?"
Richard’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. He looked frantically between Marcus, the stony-faced deputies, and me, realizing with sudden, crushing horror that his carefully constructed web of lies had completely unraveled.
