Chapter 4 - The ICU Confrontation and the Awakening**

By mid-afternoon, the intensive care unit was a hub of controlled clinical activity. I stood outside Room 402, peering through the small glass observation window. Dominic lay motionless against the pristine white hospital pillows, his head wrapped in thick gauze, a nasal cannula delivering steady oxygen, and an external fixator stabilizing his shattered right leg. He looked pale, fragile, and utterly ordinary—hardly the ruthless mastermind of a multi-million-dollar financial fraud.

As I pushed the door open and stepped into the private room, the steady, rhythmic beeping of the cardiac monitor was the only sound breaking the silence.

I stood at the foot of his bed for several long minutes, simply watching him. For five years, I had loved this man unconditionally, believing we were building a future together brick by brick, while all along he had been digging my grave and preparing my replacement.

Suddenly, Dominic’s eyelids fluttered. A low, ragged groan escaped his dry lips as he slowly fought his way back through the fog of heavy postoperative narcotics.

“Ugh... water...” he rasped, his voice weak and scratchy.

I didn't rush to pour him a glass. Instead, I calmly walked to the side of the bed, picked up the plastic pitcher, filled a small cup, and held it out just out of reach.

Dominic blinked sluggishly, focusing his hazy eyes on my face. Recognition flickered across his pale features, quickly followed by a flash of desperate, primal panic.

“Ca... Camille?” he whispered, his eyes darting frantically around the room. “Wh-where am I? What happened?”

“You had a rather violent disagreement with the back of a semi-truck on the highway last night, Dominic,” I replied, my voice chillingly detached. “You suffered severe head trauma, internal bleeding, and a shattered leg. But congratulations—the surgical team and I managed to pull you back from the brink of death.”

Relief momentarily washed over his face, mixed with confusion. He tried to shift his weight, wincing sharply as pain shot through his bandaged leg. “Thank God... You saved me. I knew you’d take care of me, baby. You’re my wife...”

I set the cup of water down on the tray without giving it to him. I leaned in close, resting my hands on the metal safety rail of the bed, looking straight into his eyes.

“Don't call me that,” I said softly.

Dominic froze. The color drained from his face again. “What... what are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about Giselle,” I said evenly. “I’m talking about the five months of pregnancy you managed to hide while playing house with me. I’m talking about your mother, Vivienne, and her grand plans for a high-society corporate merger with the Stanford real estate family.”

Dominic’s breathing spiked instantly, the cardiac monitor quickening its frantic beep. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. His guilt was written in every terrified micro-expression across his face.

“You... you know?” he choked out, his voice cracking.

“I know everything, Dominic,” I said, pulling a crisp, folded legal document from my lab coat pocket and dropping it onto his blanket. “I know about the offshore accounts. I know about the shell company V&D Holdings. And, most importantly, I know about the forged quitclaim deed you and your mother tried to use to steal our home out from under me.”

Dominic stared at the document as if it were a venomous snake. All pretense of innocence vanished, replaced by desperate, cornered aggression.

“Camille, listen to me! It was just a business arrangement!” he shouted, his voice cracking in panic. “Giselle’s family has millions tied up in downtown developments! I did it for us! For our future! I was going to provide for you!”

“By stealing my inheritance and replacing me with a younger, wealthier mistress?” I shook my head slowly, a cold, humorless smile touching my lips. “You didn't do this for our future, Dominic. You did it because you are a coward, a fraud, and a parasite.”

Before he could scream another frantic excuse, the heavy door to the ICU room swung wide open.

Vivienne stormed into the room, her designer handbag clutched tightly in her fist, her face flushed with furious indignation.

“Camille! What kind of medieval torture are you putting my son through? The nurses at the front desk said you were harassing him while he’s recovering from major surgery!” Vivienne shrieked, marching right up to the side of the bed and placing herself protectively between us.

I didn't flinch. I turned my gaze from Dominic to his mother, my eyes burning with absolute, unyielding power.

“Funny you should mention harassment, Vivienne,” I said smoothly, pulling out a second document from my pocket—this one bearing the official seal of the Superior Court of Quebec. “Because as of 9:00 AM this morning, Judge Harrison signed emergency asset-seizure and account-freezing orders across every single financial portfolio, personal bank account, and corporate asset controlled by you, your son, and V&D Holdings.”

Vivienne stopped dead in her tracks. Her jaw dropped open, and the color completely vanished from her powdered cheeks. “You... you did what?”

“I froze every single cent you own,” I said, my voice echoing triumphantly in the quiet ICU room. “Your offshore accounts? Locked. Your commercial real estate holdings? Under federal receivership audit. And this hospital room? Enjoy it while it lasts, Dominic, because the moment you are discharged, you won't even have a roof over your head or a penny in your pocket to pay for your physical therapy.”

Vivienne turned to her son in sheer horror, her voice trembling. “Dominic... tell me she’s lying. Tell me she didn't...”

Dominic stared at me with pure, unadulterated terror, realizing that his grand scheme had completely imploded.

I turned toward the door, pausing with my hand on the brass handle. I looked back over my shoulder one last time, letting a calm, radiant smile settle across my face.

“Family meetings are adjourned,” I said quietly. “I’ll see you both in court.”
