THE DENTAL CLINIC NIGHTMARE / Chapter 3 / 5

Chapter 3 - The Stakeout in the Alley and the Shadow of the Grey Van

The tactical response was swift and overwhelming. Within three minutes, three additional police cruisers blocked both ends of the commercial alley behind Bright Smiles Dentistry, their overhead lights painting the brick walls in flashing strokes of crimson and cobalt.

I stayed inside the clinic lobby with Maya, sitting her down in a comfortable recovery chair while Sarah brought her a cup of warm apple juice and a warm blanket. The little girl sipped the juice slowly, her eyes wide as she watched the flashing lights through the front windows.

“You’re safe now, Maya. The police are going to check the van,” I reassured her, resting a reassuring hand on her uninjured shoulder.

“Is my daddy really down there?” she asked softly, looking up at me with heartbreaking hope.

“We’re going to find out, sweetie. We’re going to find out right now.”

Through the large glass windows of the clinic, I watched Detective Miller and Marcus lead a perimeter sweep toward the commercial dumpsters at the far end of the parking lot. Parked right beside the rusted green waste containers was a nondescript, windowless grey Ford Transit van with tinted windows and out-of-state license plates.

The engine was idling. A faint plume of white exhaust drifted from the tailpipe into the crisp autumn air.

Detective Miller motioned for his officers to fan out. Two officers crept up along the passenger side, their service weapons drawn and held at a low ready, while Detective Miller and Marcus approached the driver’s side door.

My heart hammered against my ribs. If Arthur Vance was inside that vehicle, he was desperate, cornered, and entirely unpredictable.

Detective Miller slammed his palm against the driver’s side window, shouting over the rumble of the engine. “Columbus Police! Turn off the ignition and step out of the vehicle with your hands visible!”

For a second, nothing happened. The grey van sat motionless, idling against the curb.

Then, tires shrieked against the asphalt.

The van’s transmission slammed into reverse, roaring to life as the driver mashed the gas pedal, spinning the rear tires in a cloud of white smoke and pulverized gravel.

“He’s bolting!” Marcus shouted.

The van lurched backward, slamming violently into the front bumper of a parked police cruiser before shifting into drive and tearing forward toward the narrow alley exit, straight toward a pedestrian walkway.

“Stop the vehicle!” an officer yelled, diving out of the path of the oncoming bumper.

Before the van could break out onto the main street, one of the police cruisers strategically accelerated, blocking the alley exit entirely. With nowhere else to go, the grey van swerved violently, clipping a brick retaining wall and coming to a grinding, shuddering halt against a utility pole.

Before the cloud of dust could settle, the driver’s side door flew open. A tall, middle-aged man with wild graying hair and an expensive tailored suit jacket covered in grease stains scrambled out, trying to run on foot.

He didn't make it ten feet before Marcus and two officers tackled him to the pavement, pinning his arms behind his back and slapping steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

It was Arthur Vance.

From inside the clinic, Maya watched through the window, letting out a long, shuddering breath as if a heavy anchor had finally been lifted from her chest.

Detective Miller walked back toward the clinic entrance, pushing open the glass doors and stepping inside with a grim, determined expression. He looked directly at me, then down at Maya.

“We got him,” Detective Miller announced. “Arthur Vance is in custody. But… we searched the back of that van, and we found a reinforced access hatch leading down into the old utility basement beneath the neighboring commercial block.”

My breath caught in my throat. “Is Jeffrey Cole down there?”

May you like

Detective Miller nodded slowly. “He’s alive. But he’s injured, weak, and locked inside a security cell. We need an ambulance and a tactical medical team down there immediately.”
