Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

By the end of the week, Diane’s carefully constructed high-society facade had completely collapsed.

Without access to her corporate accounts, her offshore slush funds, or her extensive network of lawyers, the social elite who had once fawned over her charity galas and dinner parties vanished into thin air. Phone calls went unreturned. Invitation lists for upcoming charity balls mysteriously omitted her name. The very people she had spent decades trying to impress now crossed the street to avoid making eye contact with the fallen matriarch.

Marcus and I sat in the sunroom on a crisp Friday afternoon, reviewing the final asset recovery report sent over by the forensic team.

“Everything has been successfully transferred back into the primary family trust,” Marcus said, rubbing the back of his neck with a tired sigh of relief. “The corporate shares she stole from my father have been reinstated under my name, and the educational trust for Lily is fully funded, quadrupled from what it originally was.”

I reached across the table, placing my hand over his. “And Diane?”

Marcus stared out the window toward the distant hills. “She’s holed up in her old townhouse in the city. Victor abandoned her, her bank accounts are frozen pending criminal investigation for fraud, and her social circle has completely blacklisted her. She has no money, no power, and no influence left.”

A strange mixture of pity and cold justice settled in my chest. Diane had spent her entire life worshipping wealth and social standing above all else. Stripping those things away wasn't just a punishment; it was the ultimate dismantling of her identity.

“Do you think she’ll try to contact us again?” I asked softly.

“She can’t,” Marcus replied firmly. “The restraining order was approved by the judge this morning. Any attempt to approach within five hundred feet of our home, our offices, or Lily’s preschool will result in immediate arrest.”

Just as Marcus finished speaking, the doorbell rang.

I frowned, exchanging a quick, wary glance with him. “Expecting a package?”

“No,” Marcus stood up, his protective instincts instantly flaring back to life. “Stay here.”

He walked out to the foyer, cautiously pulling open the front door.

Standing on the porch wasn't Diane. It was Clara, holding a large, brightly wrapped cardboard box decorated with colorful ribbons, grinning from ear to ear.

“Surprise!” Clara called out, waltzing into the house without waiting for an invitation.

Marcus let out a breath of relief, closing the door behind her. “Clara. What are you doing here?”

“I came to make sure my favorite niece is being properly spoiled,” Clara said, heading straight for the kitchen where Lily was playing. She set the box down on the island and ripped open the lid.

Inside the box were two dozen gourmet cupcakes, frosted in bright pink, blue, and yellow, topped with glittering sugar stars.

Lily dropped her crayons and ran over, her eyes lighting up like Christmas morning. “Cupcakes?!”

“That’s right,” Clara laughed, picking up a pink one and handing it to her carefully. “And these ones are 100% certified Grandma-free zone approved. Eat as many as you want.”
