Chapter 26 - Chloe Takes the Stand
The most emotionally shattering moment of the trial came on the third day, when eight-year-old Chloe took the witness stand. When the judge gently asked if she understood the importance of telling the truth, Chloe nodded bravely, her posture upright and steady in a pretty blue summer dress. She didn't look like a victim; she looked like a survivor. David guided her through the testimony with infinite patience and care, asking her to describe what happened when they reached Grandma’s front porch on Christmas Eve.
"We knocked really hard because we were cold," Chloe said into the microphone, her small voice carrying clearly across the silent, packed courtroom. "Grandma opened the door just a little bit. I told her Daddy was in an ambulance at the hospital and we didn't know where to go. I asked if we could come inside for hot cocoa."
She paused, swallowing hard, her big eyes reflecting the pain of that night. "And what did Grandma say, sweetie?" David asked gently.
"She said we were bothering her party and that we should have called first," Chloe whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek. "Then she slammed the door right in our faces. It made a loud bang."
Across the room, Helen let out a choked, ragged sob, covering her face with her shaking hands. Chloe didn't even look at her grandmother. She turned her gaze toward the jury box, finishing her testimony with remarkable poise.

A collective gasp of emotion swept through the gallery, and several female jurors wiped tears from their eyes. When Chloe stepped down from the stand and walked back to my arms, I pulled her tightly against my chest, burying my face in her hair as Mark wrapped his arms around both of us. The defense cross-examination was abandoned instantly; no lawyer in their right mind dared cross-examine an eight-year-old hero whose bravery had exposed the black hearts of her own grandparents.
