Chapter 3 - The Trap Closes**

By 2:00 AM, the quiet corridors of the hospital had transformed into an active federal and state investigative zone.

Detective Brooks had spent two intense hours reviewing the digital contents of Marcus’s burner phone, corroborating the offshore bank transfers, the fraudulent life insurance policies, and the terrifying text messages exchanged between Marcus and an unknown co-conspirator discussing “timing the highway collision” to coincide with my solo evening commute.

The evidence wasn't just damning; it was an open-and-shut blueprint of premeditated attempted murder and grand financial fraud.

“We have enough here to issue an immediate felony arrest warrant,” Detective Brooks told me quietly, standing beside my hospital bed while two uniformed state troopers waited outside the door. “We’ve already flagged his primary residence, his office, and his credit cards. He’s cornered.”

“Don't arrest him at his office,” I said calmly, my mind calculating every move with cold, tactical precision. “Bring him here.”

Detective Brooks raised an eyebrow, surprised. “Bring him here? To the hospital?”

“Yes,” I nodded, a grim smile touching the corners of my lips. “He thinks I’m helpless, trapped in this bed, terrified of him and worried about hospital bills. If you arrest him at work, he’ll lawyer up immediately and demand a bail hearing. But if you call him and tell him that I’ve agreed to sign his discharge papers and transfer our remaining joint savings to avoid debt... he will come running back here within twenty minutes.”

The detective stared at me for a long moment, a slow, appreciative grin spreading across his face. “You have ice in your veins, Mrs. Vance. I love it.”

At 2:45 AM, Detective Brooks dialed Marcus’s primary cell phone using a secure line.

The phone rang three times before Marcus answered, his voice breathless, panicked, and dripping with venom. “What do you want?! I told you I’m not paying for her hospital games!”

“Mr. Marcus Vance?” Detective Brooks spoke in a calm, authoritative tone, mimicking a hospital administrative legal coordinator. “This is the billing and legal department at Seattle Memorial. Your wife has reconsidered her position. She realizes the financial strain this accident is causing and has agreed to sign the immediate AMA—Against Medical Advice—discharge paperwork, along with the asset transfer forms you requested earlier.”

There was a stunned, heavy silence on the other end of the line.

Marcus was greedy, arrogant, and desperate. The prospect of getting his hands on my remaining funds outweighed his paranoia.

“She... she’ll sign the papers right now?” Marcus stammered, his voice shifting from anger to greedy excitement.

“Yes, sir. But she insists you come sign them in person before the night shift ends at 3:30 AM,” the detective replied smoothly. “Room 204. Don't be late.”

“I’m on my way,” Marcus snapped, and the line went dead.

The next thirty minutes passed in absolute, agonizing slow motion. Nurse Clara helped me adjust my pillows, ensuring I looked pale, exhausted, and vulnerable—playing the perfect part of the submissive, terrified wife he expected to find.

At exactly 3:15 AM, heavy, hurried footsteps echoed down the linoleum hallway.

The door to room 204 swung violently open.

Marcus rushed into the room, his hair disheveled, a manic, triumphant grin plastered across his face. He didn't even look at the heart monitors or my bandaged leg; his eyes were locked entirely on the clipboard resting on the bedside table.

“See? I told you!” Marcus crowed loudly, stepping right up to the bed. “You finally came to your senses! Where’s the pen? Let’s sign this right now before you change your—'

He stopped dead in his tracks.

The heavy oak door clicked shut behind him. Two towering state troopers stepped out from the shadowy corners of the room, their uniforms catching the fluorescent light, while Detective Brooks stepped forward from the foot of the bed with a pair of heavy steel handcuffs gleaming in his hand.

Marcus blinked, stumbling backward until his spine hit the opposite wall.

“W-What is this?!” Marcus shrieked, his face draining of all color as his eyes darted around the room in absolute panic. “What are you doing? Who are you people?!”

Detective Brooks stepped directly into his personal space, holding up the black burner phone so the glowing screen illuminated Marcus’s terrified face.

“Marcus Vance, you are under arrest for attempted premeditated homicide, wire fraud, identity theft, and insurance tampering,” the detective stated, his voice ringing with absolute, crushing authority.

Marcus let out a strangled gasp, his knees buckling slightly as the cold reality of the trap closed around him forever.
