Chapter 4 - The Iron and the Silk

Evelyn Shaw did not storm into Luca’s office. She glided in with the lethal, calculated precision of a woman who had spent her entire life attending etiquette classes and managing high-society collateral damage. Behind her walked two men in expensive charcoal suits carrying heavy leather briefcases—the heavy artillery from Shaw, Sterling & Vance, Chicago’s most ruthless family law firm.

Marcus stepped back into the shadows near the floor-to-ceiling windows, crossing his arms as he watched the scene unfold.

Luca didn't stand up. He remained seated behind his massive glass desk, his face a mask of cold, exhausted indifference. “Evelyn. This is a surprise. Shouldn't you be at the charity gala committee meeting?”

Evelyn stopped three feet from his desk. Her diamond-encrusted tennis bracelet caught the morning light as she placed her handbag on the edge of the glass. Her face was pristine, but her eyes were shards of glacial ice.

“Cut the act, Luca,” Evelyn said, her voice smooth and devoid of warmth. “My phone hasn't stopped buzzing since Saturday night. Half the socialites in Chicago saw you lose your mind over a commoner and her bastards in the middle of Aurelia.”

“Watch your language, Evelyn,” Luca warned, his voice dropping an octave into a dangerous register. “Those children share my blood.”

“Oh, spare me the dramatic patriarch routine!” Evelyn snapped, her composure cracking for a split second before she reined it back in. “We had an agreement, Luca. A partnership. You wanted the Moretti name elevated, you wanted a wife who looked flawless on your arm at state dinners, and I wanted access to your empire and social standing. We both knew there was no love. But there was supposed to be loyalty.”

“I didn't know about them,” Luca said coldly.

“That’s irrelevant,” one of the attorneys stepped forward, opening a leather folder. “Mr. Moretti, I am Arthur Sterling. Under the prenuptial agreement signed prior to your marriage to Miss Shaw, infidelity or the existence of unrecognized heirs resulting from prior relationships that destabilize the public image and marital standing of Mrs. Shaw triggers severe financial penalties, including the forfeiture of joint asset distributions.”

Luca let out a dark, bitter laugh. He leaned back in his leather chair, staring at the high-priced lawyer as if he were an annoying gnat.

“You think I care about money right now, Arthur?” Luca asked softly. “You think a financial penalty from a preup matters to a man who just found out he has twin heirs?”

“It matters when your entire board of directors finds out you’ve been harboring a secret family while projecting the image of a clean, stable corporate dynasty,” Evelyn countered, stepping closer to the desk, her eyes narrowing. “If you think for one second that I am going to let some working-class nobody and her illegitimate kids tear down everything my family name helped you build, you are insane.”

“You don't control me, Evelyn,” Luca said, standing up slowly. At six-foot-two, towering over her with raw, predatory authority, he looked every bit the ruthless titan the magazines described. “Moretti Global is mine. I built it. I can burn it to the ground tomorrow and still have enough left over to buy out your father’s entire portfolio.”

Evelyn stepped back, her breath hitching. She looked at Luca, seeing a man she had never truly known—a man possessed by a sudden, primal obsession that transcended stocks, status, and corporate branding.

“You’re going to destroy us all over a woman you divorced five years ago,” Evelyn whispered in disbelief.

“No, Evelyn,” Luca said, walking past her toward the office door. “I spent five years believing I was broken. Now I found out I’m whole. And I’m going to get my family back, whether Nia wants me to or not.”
