Chapter 1 - The Crimson Splat and the Broken Ring**

The ultra-exclusive Manhattan gala at Hudson Yards was supposed to be a celebration of architectural triumph and corporate prestige, but it quickly devolved into a theater of public cruelty. Standing smack in the center of the glittering ballroom, Madison—the woman openly having a flagrant affair with my husband—flashed a wicked, triumphant smirk. With a sharp, deliberate flick of her wrist, a full goblet of vintage crimson wine splashed directly onto the bodice of my custom black silk gown.
The freezing beverage trickled down my skin, bringing an immediate, sharp sting of humiliation under the blinding lights of chandeliers and flashbulbs. In a flash, Madison slapped a manicured hand over her mouth, letting out a theatrical gasp and stumbling backward as if I had violently assaulted her.
“Oh! Oh, my god! I am so clumsy!” Madison wailed, though her eyes remained hard and gleeful.
Before I could even blink, my husband, Everett, along with my venomous mother-in-law, Patricia, pushed their way aggressively through the circle of onlookers and hurried over to the scene.
“Have you completely lost your mind, Evelyn Hart?” Everett yelled, his expression twisting with dramatic, unbridled fury. “Madison is a VIP guest, a crucial strategic partner I personally brought here! You drag yourself to this high-society event looking like a pathetic stray, and you have the nerve to spill wine on her? Do you have any idea that her dress is worth a hundred times more than your pathetic life?”
A murmur rippled through the crowd of elite socialites, investors, and corporate vultures. Everyone knew Everett, the charismatic golden boy CEO of Blackstone Crest Holdings. And everyone knew me—the quiet, unassuming wife who stayed in the background, carefully guarding his pristine public image while funding his rise from the shadows.
“A VIP guest, or just your partner in bed?” I snapped back calmly, my tone slicing right through the growing whispers like a surgical blade.
Madison flinched slightly, but Patricia stepped forward, her face flushed with pure malice. “Keep your mouth shut, you worthless leech! My son is a CEO bringing in millions and running a corporate empire! If you don’t drop to your knees and beg Madison for forgiveness right this second, I’ll have Everett kick you out of the house tonight and strip you of everything!”
Everett, high on the applause of the onlookers and blinded by his own corporate arrogance, violently yanked off his platinum wedding ring and tossed it at my feet. It clattered loudly against the polished Italian marble floor, spinning in tight circles before coming to a dead stop.
“Security! Drag this insane woman out of this building immediately!” Everett shouted, turning his back on me to comfort his weeping mistress.
A decade of my youth—a decade spent silently swallowing the bitter label of a gold-digger just to preserve his fragile corporate image—all of it concluded right here, on this cold marble floor. I slowly lifted my chin. In my gaze was the freezing chill of an ancient glacier staring down at insects marching happily into a raging fire.
“You claim I’m an absolute nobody here, correct?” I scoffed softly, the sound carrying easily across the hushed room. “Alright then. I am going to show you exactly what you amount to without me.”
While hundreds of curious eyes watched in stunned silence, I reached slowly into my designer clutch, pulled out my encrypted satellite cell phone, dialed a direct extension, and switched the speaker on. My voice echoed out across the ballroom, clear, sharp, and dripping with absolute authority:
“Grant, initiate the emergency board resolution for Blackstone Crest Holdings right now. I have submitted my authorization as the majority shareholder. Terminate Everett from his role as CEO with immediate effect. Freeze every single one of his personal and corporate financial accounts. Send private security to promptly seize the Greenwich estate and all three of his corporate supercars. Every detail must be carried out tonight.”
A deep, respectful voice answered instantly from the device. “Yes, ma’am. The security squad and forensic audit teams are already waiting for your command in the lobby.”
I tapped the screen and ended the connection. Pure, suffocating silence hung in the air for three agonizing seconds before my mother-in-law erupted into hysterical, mocking laughter.
“Oh my goodness! She has completely lost her marbles!” Patricia cackled, clutching her pearls. “You paid some random actor over the phone to frighten us? You genuinely believe you can strip my son of his CEO position just like that?”
Everett chuckled with absolute pity, wrapping his arm tightly around Madison’s waist. “You are truly delusional, Evelyn. Get out before I have you arrested for disturbing the peace.”
I folded my arms across my stained chest, the edges of my lips turning up into a dangerously sharp, knowing smile.

“Hold on tight to your mistress and your fragile ego, Everett,” I whispered, turning on my heel. “Let's see if you and your mother are still laughing this loudly in thirty minutes when your entire empire is burned to ash.”
