Chapter 4 - The Courtroom Ambush**

The courtroom of the Federal District Court of Appeals was packed to capacity. Flashbulbs popped outside the stone steps as high-priced defense attorneys pushed past reporters shouting questions about Callahan Industries’ sudden stock drop. Inside, the atmosphere was tense enough to crack glass.

Victoria Callahan sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing an immaculate Chanel suit and a mask of grieving maternal concern, while Richard sat beside her, whispering instructions to their lead counsel, a ruthless corporate litigator named Harrison Vance.

Clara walked into the courtroom wearing a simple blue dress, flanked by two federal public defenders who moved with quiet, terrifying competence. She didn't look like a criminal anymore; she looked like a witness for the prosecution.

Judge Thomas banged his gavel, calling the room to order. “We are here for the emergency bond revocation and evidentiary hearing in the matter of State v. Jenkins. Mr. Vance, you may present your opening statement.”

Harrison Vance stood up, adjusting his tie with theatrical confidence. “Your Honor, the defense moves to dismiss all counter-claims by the defendant. The accused is a disgruntled former employee who attempted grand larceny, interstate kidnapping, and malicious defamation against one of our state’s most respected philanthropic families. We have signed affidavits and fabricated inventory logs proving—”

“Objection, Your Honor,” Clara’s lead attorney interrupted smoothly, standing up. “Surprise evidence under Federal Rule of Evidence 403(b). Material witness protection and digital provenance.”

Harrison scoffed. “Your Honor, this is a procedural ambush! They have no admissible—”

“Quiet, Mr. Vance,” Judge Thomas commanded, leaning forward over his bench. He looked down at the federal marshal standing nearby. “What is being submitted into the record?”

Clara reached into her handbag, pulled out a small, unassuming silver flash drive, and placed it on the clerk’s tray.

“An unedited, cryptographic master-log containing six months of high-definition audio and video surveillance from the Callahan Manor private nursery,” Clara stated clearly, her voice echoing across the silent courtroom. “Including recordings of Mrs. Callahan deliberately tampering with the child’s prescription medication, alongside financial transfers linking Callahan Industries to offshore slush funds used to bribe local child-services inspectors.”

The color drained instantly from Victoria Callahan’s face. She stood up so fast her chair screeched against the wooden floor. “That’s a lie! It’s deepfake technology! Fabricated trash by a criminal!”

“Sit down, Mrs. Callahan, or I will have you removed for contempt,” Judge Thomas warned sharply. He nodded to the court technician. “Play the file.”

Within three seconds, the courtroom speakers crackled to life. The crisp, unmistakable voice of Victoria Callahan boomed across the room, casually discussing how to drug little Lily so she wouldn't talk to social workers, followed immediately by Richard Callahan’s voice laughing about how easily the local police department could be bought off.

Gasps rippled through the gallery. Reporters frantically scribbled notes. Harrison Vance dropped his pen, staring at his clients in sudden, absolute horror as he realized he had been dragged down with a sinking ship.
