Chapter 2 - The Digital Shadow**

By 6:00 PM, Lily was resting comfortably in a private room at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, hooked up to intravenous saline and electrolyte drips. Her breathing had stabilized, and the terrifying blue tint to her lips had faded back to a healthy pink. She was fast asleep, exhausted from the trauma of heat stroke and physical assault.
I sat quietly in the hard plastic chair beside her bed, bathed in the dim blue light of my secure government-issued laptop.
While ordinary parents would have relied solely on school board complaints and local police reports—systems that too often protect predatory teachers behind walls of bureaucratic red tape—I operated in a completely different world. My department tracked illicit networks, uncovered institutional cover-ups, and exposed individuals who believed their local status shielded them from accountability.
With a few rapid keystrokes, I bypassed the Westridge Middle School firewall, gaining deep root access to their administrative servers, internal staff communications, and, most importantly, the closed-circuit security camera feeds overlooking the athletic fields.
It took me less than fifteen minutes to locate the high-definition footage from earlier that afternoon.
I plugged in my headphones and watched the video unfold on my screen. The camera angle from the gymnasium overhang captured the north athletic field in crisp detail. There was Lily, running drills alongside her classmates. Then, Jason Vance stepped into the frame.
The footage showed Vance striding aggressively toward my daughter as she paused to catch her breath near the water station. He didn't offer her water. Instead, the video—captured without audio, but painfully clear in its body language—showed him grabbing her forcefully by the left arm, digging his fingers into her flesh, and violently shaking her while screaming into her face. When Lily tried to pull away, he shoved her hard against the metal bleachers, causing her to strike her ribs before collapsing from heat exhaustion.
Worse still, as I dug deeper into the school’s digital archives, a horrifying pattern began to emerge.
Vance’s file wasn't clean. Far from it. Over the past three years, three other female students had submitted formal complaints against Vance for aggressive physical hazing, excessive punishment, and verbal harassment. Yet, every single one of those files had been mysteriously scrubbed, downgraded, or buried by the school’s principal, Arthur Sterling—a man who played golf with Vance every weekend and sat on the local county sports committee.
They weren't just protecting a rogue teacher; they were protecting an institutional predator.
My phone buzzed on the hospital tray. It was a text message from an unknown number.
*“Tick-tock, Elena. Hope your daughter learns her lesson tonight. Tomorrow's track session is going to be twice as long.”*
I stared at the screen, a cold, surgical smile touching the corners of my lips. Vance was playing psychological warfare, believing he held all the cards. He didn't realize that every keystroke I made was pulling the noose a little tighter around his neck.
I forwarded the decrypted security footage and the buried disciplinary files to my director at the federal cyber-division, attaching a high-priority memo requesting an immediate federal ethics and child endangerment audit of Westridge Middle School.
Then, I dialed a direct number.

"Chief Inspector Miller," I said smoothly when the line picked up. "I need a specialized multi-jurisdictional task force mobilized for a Westridge educational facility audit tomorrow morning. We’re taking down a protected predator."
