Chapter 4 - The Dismantling of a Monster**

Within two hours, the private hospital wing looked less like a medical ward and more like a high-stakes legal war room.
My father arrived flanked by two federal prosecutors, three elite corporate attorneys from his firm, and a detachment of private security specialists who secured the entire perimeter of the hospital floor. When my father walked into my room and saw the bandages covering my burns, the strong, formidable politician completely broke down, pulling me gently into his arms and weeping openly against my shoulder.
"I'm so sorry we let him keep you away, sweet girl," my father whispered, kissing my forehead repeatedly. "We never stopped looking for you. We just believed his lies because we trusted the system. But the system is going to destroy him now."
The legal team didn't waste a single second. While Dr. Evans filed formal, expedited federal charges regarding domestic terrorism, physical torture, and intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm, my father’s financial attorneys went straight to work on dismantling Luke’s entire life.
It turned out that everything Luke owned—his car, his lavish downtown condo lease, his supposed startup tech firm—was entirely built on borrowed capital, fraudulent loans, and systematic embezzlement of funds he had secretly siphoned from my personal trust accounts over the years.
By afternoon, a judge had issued an emergency asset-freeze order. Every bank account, credit card, and corporate asset registered in Luke’s name was instantly locked down and seized by court-appointed receivers.
When Luke was brought into the precinct booking room for his initial arraignment later that afternoon, expecting his high-priced criminal defense attorney to bail him out within minutes, he discovered a horrifying surprise.
His lawyer had refused to take the case after realizing the federal wire fraud and embezzlement charges carried a mandatory minimum of twenty-five years in federal prison, completely independent of the state-level domestic abuse and attempted murder charges.
Even better, my younger sister, Maya—whom Luke had spent four years convincing me hated my guts—flew in on the earliest private flight from Chicago, bursting through my hospital room door with tear-stained cheeks and throwing her arms around my neck so hard we both started crying uncontrollably.
"You stupid, stubborn idiot," Maya sobbed into my shoulder, squeezing me gently so as not to hurt my burns. "Why didn't you reach out sooner? Did you really think we would ever abandon you?"
"He changed my phone, Maya," I whispered, holding onto her like she was a lifeline to reality. "He made me believe I was completely alone."
"Well, he's about to find out what it feels like to be truly alone," Maya said, her eyes flashing with a fierce, protective anger that mirrored our father's. "His mother already packed her bags and fled the state when the federal marshals showed up at their family home. His business partners have all turned state's evidence against him to save their own skins. He has nobody left."
For the first time in four years, the cold, heavy knot of fear in my chest completely dissolved.
The man who had beaten me, scalded my flesh, and tried to erase my very existence was sitting in a cold, concrete holding cell with no money, no lawyers, no allies, and no way out.

The monster had finally been unmasked. And the reckoning was just beginning.
