Chapter 2 - The Betrayal Within the Inner Circle

The storm outside had subsided into a heavy, suffocating silence by dawn, leaving the county roads buried beneath two feet of pristine, untracked snow. Inside the clinic, the air smelled of antiseptic, wet wool, and the faint, coppery tang of medical alcohol. Enzo Valenti had not moved from his chair when the first pale rays of morning light cut horizontally across the linoleum floor. He sat upright, his dark coat still buttoned, looking every bit the aging patriarch who commanded an empire built on shadow and steel.

Iris stepped out of the prep room with a fresh saline bag, her eyes burning from lack of sleep. She paused as she noticed the younger man—the one who had been spinning his keys—standing near the front desk, casually flipping through her patient intake logs without permission.

"Put that down," Iris said, her voice sharp and devoid of fear.

The young man looked up, his dark eyes flashing with amusement. He tossed the log onto the counter. "Relax, Dr. Cantrell. I'm Dante. Enzo’s nephew. Or did my uncle forget to introduce the family?"

Enzo stood up slowly, his joints popping slightly in the quiet room. He ignored Dante completely, walking over to the stainless-steel table where Orion lay resting, his breathing steady now beneath a warm fleece blanket. The big cane corso lifted his chin as Enzo's hand approached, leaning into the touch with absolute trust.

"He's stabilizing," Iris said, walking closer despite her exhaustion. "The chemical burns on his flanks are superficial, but whatever they used caused severe systemic shock. More importantly... someone inside your circle did this to him, Mr. Valenti. The pattern of the caustic burn wasn't accidental. It was deliberate. Someone tried to blind him permanently and throw him out in a freezing field to die."

Dante let out a short, sharp laugh from the corner. "Oh, come on, Doc. Dogs get into things. Antifreeze, industrial solvents in the yards. You're looking for a conspiracy where there's just a clumsy hound."

Iris turned her gaze from Enzo to Dante, her intuition flaring like a warning light. "Antifreeze doesn't splash in uniform vertical stripes along both flanks while leaving the paws untouched, Mr. Valenti. And a dog doesn't get scrubbed down to raw brass on his collar plate by accident. Someone wanted him erased."

Enzo’s face remained an unreadable mask, but a muscle ticked sharply along his jawline. He turned his dark eyes toward his nephew. "Dante. Wait outside in the car."

Dante’s smile faded instantly, replaced by a cold, hardened edge. "Uncle Enzo, you can't seriously be listening to a country veterinarian over family—"

"I said wait outside," Enzo repeated, his voice dropping an octave into a tone that brooked no argument.

Dante glared at Iris for one long, venomous second before turning on his heel and storming out into the snow, slamming the clinic door hard enough to rattle the windowpanes.

When the latch clicked shut, Enzo looked back down at Orion, then slowly raised his gaze to meet Iris’s eyes. "You are sharper than you look, Dr. Cantrell. That is either going to save your life, or it is going to get you killed in this city."

"I save animals, Mr. Valenti. I don't play mob politics," Iris retorted, crossing her arms.

"In Philadelphia, they are the same thing," Enzo replied softly. "Orion is not just a dog. He was trained to guard my youngest granddaughter. When she was targeted three nights ago, someone drugged her nursery, took the child, and tried to eliminate the dog by pouring industrial acid on him before dumping him in the snow to freeze."

Iris stepped back, the breath catching in her throat. "Your granddaughter... they took a child?"

"She is safe now," Enzo said, though his eyes darkened with a terrifying promise of retribution. "My men recovered her within an hour. But the person who facilitated the breach... the person who disabled the estate's security system and tried to kill Orion... was someone inside my own house. Someone Dante trusts implicitly."

Iris stared at the powerful mob boss, suddenly realizing the terrifying gravity of the world she had just stepped into. She wasn't just treating a stray dog; she was holding the key piece of evidence in an internal war for control of the Valenti syndicate.
