Chapter 1 - The Garage Discovery**

The rain over the suburbs of Chicago didn’t fall so much as it hammered, turning the asphalt into a slick, glistening mirror. Inside the garage of our sprawling, custom-built home, the air was thick with the scent of motor oil, damp concrete, and the unmistakable, lingering mist of French jasmine.

It was Brenda’s perfume.

I stood beside Mark’s immaculate black BMW SUV, my hand resting frozen on the handle of the rear passenger door. Mark had rushed inside twenty minutes earlier, claiming a debilitating migraine had forced him to cut his corporate investors' dinner short. He had hurried past me without even a glance, his posture tense, muttering something about grabbing a handful of ibuprofen and heading straight to bed.

I had only come into the garage to close the sunroof. I remembered seeing the weather report flash an amber alert for severe hail. But as I leaned across the leather interior, a faint flash of darkness caught my eye from beneath the floorboard of the back seat.

I reached down.

My fingers brushed against something silky, light, and utterly damning. When I pulled it into the dim glow of the garage overhead light, my breath caught. Black lace underwear. Intricate, expensive, and completely foreign to my own drawer.

For three long, agonizing seconds, the world stopped turning.

Twenty-eight years. Twenty-eight years of standing shoulder-to-shoulder, building Crestview Developments from a two-man desk in a cramped basement into a multi-million-dollar real estate firm. I had spent my youth managing the payroll while we ate canned soup, balancing the ledger when banks turned us down, and pouring my father’s hard-earned retirement savings into keeping the lights on. And now, the fruits of our shared exhaustion were apparently being used to fund secret trysts in the back seat of a luxury vehicle parked in our own driveway.

I didn't scream. I didn't drop to my knees in tears. In fact, a strange, terrifying calm washed over my veins. Decades of dealing with corrupt contractors, hostile zoning boards, and corporate backstabbers had taught me one fundamental rule of survival: never react in anger when you can react with strategy.

If Mark wanted to play games behind my back, thinking I was just a docile, aging housewife who could be quietly pushed aside for a twenty-five-year-old secretary, he was about to learn a very painful lesson.

I slid the black lace into a padded manila envelope, sealed it tightly, and wrote a single address on the front with a heavy black marker: Andrew Miller. Brenda’s husband.

I added a short, typed note inside: You deserve to know where your wife’s loyalty lies.

By midnight, the package was dropped into a public collection box three blocks away. I slept like a stone. Little did I know, the bomb I had just mailed was about to detonate a chain reaction that would uncover secrets far darker than a simple workplace affair.
