The Birthday Heist / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Two months after the arraignment, the trial was over before it even truly began. Facing overwhelming forensic evidence, Mason Bradley accepted a plea deal to testify against his aunt in exchange for a reduced three-year sentence. Teresa Bradley was sentenced to twelve years in federal prison with no possibility of parole for the first six.

The extended family—the aunts, uncles, and cousins who had cheered on her cruelty at the birthday party—evaporated overnight like morning mist. Not a single one of them called, texted, or dropped by. They were cowards hiding in the shadows, terrified that our legal team would audit their own shady financial dealings next.

And we didn't care. We didn't want them in our lives anyway.

On a bright Saturday afternoon in November, our house on Willow Creek Lane felt completely transformed.

The old, outdated wallpaper in the living room had been stripped away and replaced with warm, modern neutral tones chosen entirely by Amy. The kitchen—once the site of humiliation and forced servitude—now smelled of freshly baked cinnamon rolls and roasted coffee beans.

Frederick was walking now, stumbling unsteadily across the hardwood floors with a plastic toy truck in his hand, laughing hysterically as our golden retriever chased him around the kitchen island.

I stood by the open back patio doors, watching Amy sit at the dining table, sketching out design plans for her own freelance interior decorating business—something she had always wanted to do, but never had the financial independence or confidence to pursue under Teresa’s thumb.

She looked up, catching me watching her, and offered a radiant, genuine smile that made my heart skip a beat just like it had on our wedding day.

“What are you staring at, mister?” she teased softly, laying down her pencil.

I walked over, leaned down, and kissed the top of her head, inhaling the scent of vanilla and shampoo.

“Just admiring the queen of the castle,” I murmured against her hair.

May you like

Amy laughed, grabbing my hand and pulling me down into the chair beside her. “No queens here, Connor. Just a home that finally belongs to us.”
