Chapter 10 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Three months later.

The autumn air over Nashville was crisp and smelled of woodsmoke and turning leaves.

The front yard of our house looked completely different. The overgrown bushes had been trimmed, a brand-new wooden porch swing hung beside the front door, and a colorful tricycle sat parked near the garage.

Inside the nursery, Frederick was laughing as he chased a rolling toy across the hardwood floor, fully recovered, strong, and brimming with life-fever-free and safe.

Amy stood beside me in the kitchen, pouring two cups of coffee. The dark circles under her eyes were gone, replaced by a quiet, vibrant peace that I hadn't seen since the day we got married.

"The title company called," Amy said, smiling softly as she handed me a mug. "The second mortgage has been officially nullified by the federal judge. The house is completely, legally ours, free and clear."

I took a sip of the coffee, looking out the kitchen window toward the backyard where my mother had tried to orchestrate our ruin.

Teresa was currently awaiting trial in federal custody, facing up to fifteen years behind bars. Mason had accepted a plea deal to testify against her in exchange for a reduced sentence. The extended family—the aunts and uncles who had laughed in the kitchen and supported her scheme—had all vanished into the wind, blocking our numbers and pretending they never knew a thing.

Good riddance.

"Let them keep their secrets and their schemes," I said, putting my arm around Amy’s shoulders and pulling her close against my side. "We’ve got a real foundation now."

Amy rested her head against my chest, listening to the steady, unyielding beat of my heart.

"Yeah," she whispered, looking down at our son as he babbled happily on the rug. "And this time, nobody’s ever taking it apart."
