Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of the Lies and the Search for Truth

“Cinda?” Alexander whispered, the name tearing from his throat like broken glass.
Hearing her real name spoken out loud in a normal tone seemed to shatter whatever fragile grip on reality the deranged woman had left. Cinda froze, her wild eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror. She recognized those cold gray eyes. She recognized the tailored charcoal suit, the sharp jawline, and the overwhelming aura of wealth and absolute power that she had spent her entire life trying to possess and control.
“No... no, no, no!” Cinda shrieked, backing away frantically, her heels tripping over the concrete curb. “Stay away from me! I didn't mean to! It was the doctor! Dr. Harrison did it! I paid him, yes, but she was supposed to just disappear! She wasn't supposed to come back!”
The bustling pedestrians around them slowed down, turning their heads to stare at the bizarre spectacle unfolding outside the luxury boutique: the billionaire CEO of Clark Industries publicly confronting a deranged homeless woman on the sidewalk.
Alexander’s guards rushed forward to block the crowd, but Alexander ignored them entirely. He lunged forward, grabbing Cinda by the filthy lapels of her oversized trench coat, lifting her slightly off the pavement with a surge of terrifying, adrenaline-fueled strength.
“What did you just say?” Alexander demanded, his voice shaking with a fury so intense it terrified even his veteran security detail. “What did you say about Dr. Harrison? What did you do to Brianna?!”
Cinda thrashed wildly in his grip, foaming at the mouth, her mind completely unmoored from reality. “She was going to take you away from me! She was going to give you a child! So I paid him! I paid him a million dollars to stop her heart on the operating table! But she didn't stay dead! She haunts me! Every night she haunts me in the alleys!”
The words hit Alexander like a physical blow, knocking him completely to his knees right there on the filthy concrete of Fifth Avenue.
*A million dollars.*
*To stop her heart on the operating table.*
The forged death certificate. The closed-casket funeral. The seven years of crushing, suffocating grief that had nearly driven him to take his own life. It was all a lie. A calculated, murderous conspiracy engineered by the woman standing before him—a woman whose own conscience had finally driven her completely insane.
“You...” Alexander choked out, his vision blurring with hot, furious tears that he had not shed in a decade. “You murdered her. You murdered the mother of my child.”
“Boss! Boss, look at him!” one of the guards shouted, pointing down.
Alexander snapped his head down. Cinda’s adopted young son was standing frozen beside her, clutching a worn-out stuffed animal. As the boy looked up, blinking tears away from his dark, luminous eyes, Alexander saw something that froze his blood.
The boy possessed the exact same distinct, almond-shaped eye structure, the same slope of the nose, and the same quiet intensity that Alexander stared at every morning in his own bathroom mirror.
He wasn't Cinda’s child.
He was Brianna’s child.
“Where did you get this boy?” Alexander roared, grabbing Cinda’s shoulders and shaking her violently. “Tell me the truth right now, or I swear to God I will bury you in a federal black-site prison for the rest of your natural life!”
Cinda cackled hysterically, drool spilling down her chin as her mind snapped completely under the pressure. “I stole him! From the underground clinic where they dumped her body after she woke up! She didn't die, Alexander! She lived, but she forgot everything! She wandered away into the night like a ghost, and I took her baby to punish her!”
Alexander released her abruptly, letting her collapse into a pathetic heap on the sidewalk. He stood up slowly, his chest heaving, his mind racing with a terrifying, blinding realization.
Brianna was alive.
She had survived the poison, she had survived the abandonment, and somewhere out there in the sprawling, unforgiving expanse of the city, she was walking the streets with no memory of who she was, while her child had been stolen away by the very monster who tried to destroy them both.

“Find her,” Alexander whispered to his lead security enforcer, his voice dropping into a lethal, glacial register that commanded absolute obedience. “Search every hospital, every shelter, every alley, and every soup kitchen in every borough of this city. If you don't find Brianna within twenty-four hours, I will strip this entire corporation down to bare metal and turn every stone in this country upside down until she is in my arms.”
