Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

The whispers in the grand ballroom erupted into a deafening roar of shock and speculation.
Lead federal investigator Agent Miller stepped forward, flashing a gold badge directly in front of Julian’s pale, trembling face. “Julian Sterling, you are hereby placed under arrest for corporate wire fraud, embezzlement of Vanguard subsidiary funds, and submitting fraudulent collateral documents to secure illegal bridge loans.”
“This is insane! You can't do this!” Julian shrieked hysterically, thrashing backward as the federal marshals grabbed his arms and slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists. “I demand to speak to the Vanguard chairman! This is a setup! Clara! Tell them! Tell them this is a mistake!”
Clara remained standing at the podium, her expression as cold and immovable as carved marble. She looked down at her wretched ex-husband with quiet, unbothered pity.
“There is no mistake, Mr. Sterling,” Clara said into the microphone, her voice carrying an absolute authority that silenced the entire room. “You spent five years treating loyalty like weakness and exploiting people you thought were beneath you. You built your entire corporate empire on a house of cards funded by Vanguard debt. And today, I simply pulled the bottom card.”
Cassandra let out a shrill scream, dropping her designer clutch bag onto the marble floor as she realized she was now tied to a sinking, bankrupt criminal. “Julian! You said you were a multimillionaire! You said you owned everything!” she wailed, shoving him away before sprinting toward the exit through the parting crowd.
Julian glared at Clara with pure, unadulterated venom as the marshals dragged him toward the double doors. “You ruined me! You bitch! You’ll pay for this!”
“Take him away,” Clara commanded quietly.
The doors closed behind him, cutting off his frantic screams. The glittering elite of New York stood in stunned, reverent silence, staring at the young woman on the stage with a mixture of awe and sheer terror. They finally understood who truly held the reins of power in this city.
Following the gala, Clara retreated to the VIP penthouse lounge at the top of Vanguard Tower, looking out over the glittering sea of city lights stretching out beneath her feet.
Arthur walked in quietly, placing a leather-bound folder on the mahogany desk beside her. “The liquidation of Sterling Architectural Group is complete, Madame Chair. Their headquarters have been seized, their assets absorbed into Vanguard holdings, and Julian’s predatory lenders have been referred to the federal prosecutor’s office. He will spend the next decade behind bars.”

Clara didn't smile. She felt no joy in revenge—only the clean, refreshing clarity of absolute justice. She had survived the fire, shed the dead weight of a toxic betrayal, and reclaimed her birthright as the undisputed queen of the financial world.
