Chapter 3 - The Sands of Time and Trust

Maya spent the next three days on the island, a world of blinding sun, turquoise waters, and opulent luxury that felt utterly surreal. She was given a suite that was larger than her entire apartment in Oakhaven, with a private balcony that offered panoramic views of the ocean. A personal assistant, a woman named Chloe, was assigned to her, attending to her every whim with a quiet efficiency that was both impressive and slightly intimidating.
But the most significant part of her stay was her time with Julian. They spent hours together, walking along the private beach, dining on gourmet meals prepared by a world-class chef, and talking. Not just about the past, but about the present, the future, and the myriad of emotions that swirled between them.
Julian showed her the island, a testament to his meticulous planning and his desire for control. He was no longer the fisherman's son; he was a man who commanded respect and fear, a man who had built an empire from the ashes of his destroyed youth. Yet, with Maya, he was gentle, attentive, and filled with a regret that was almost palpable.
"I never meant to hurt you, Maya," Julian said one afternoon as they sat on the beach, watching the sunset paint the sky in shades of rose and gold. "The guilt of leaving you, of letting you believe I was dead, has been my constant companion for ten years. It's a burden I'll carry for the rest of my life."
"I believe you, Julian," Maya replied, her voice quiet. "And I understand why you did it. But understanding doesn't erase the pain. It doesn't bring back the ten years we lost."
"I know," Julian said, his voice thick with emotion. "I can't give you back those years. I can't undo the past. But I can offer you a future. I can offer you a life where you'll never have to worry, where you'll be safe and cherished. I know it's not the life we planned in Oakhaven, but it's a life I want to share with you, if you'll let me."
He reached out and took her hand, his fingers warm against her skin. A spark, a familiar warmth she hadn't felt in a decade, ignited within her.
"I'm still in love with you, Julian," Maya admitted, her voice barely a whisper. "That's the problem. If I hated you, if I had truly moved on, this would be easy. But I didn't. I've been in love with a ghost for ten years. And now, the ghost is here, and he's flesh and blood, and he's a billionaire with a target on his back."
"I've eliminated the threats," Julian assured her. "The syndicate is gone. I'm safe, and I'll make sure you're safe too. I have security measures in place that are state-of-the-art. No one will ever hurt you again."
"It's not just about safety," Maya argued. "It's about trust. You lied to me for ten years. How can I ever be sure you won't lie to me again? How can I build a future on a foundation of deception?"
"I lied to protect you," Julian pleaded. "It was the only way. And I've paid for that lie every single day. I know I have to earn your trust back. I know it won't happen overnight. But I'm willing to wait. I'm willing to do whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, to prove to you that you can trust me with your heart again."
He leaned in, his lips brushing hers, a tentative kiss that was filled with a decade of longing. Maya didn't pull away. Instead, she kissed him back, a kiss that was both an acknowledgement of their shared past and a hesitant step towards an uncertain future.
That evening, they dined on the beach, under a canopy of stars. The sound of the waves was a constant rhythm, a reminder of the tides that had shaped their lives. As they ate, they talked about Oakhaven, about the bakery, about the simple pleasures of a life Maya had built for herself. Julian listened, a look of wistful longing on his face, as if he were trying to catch a glimpse of the life he had been forced to abandon.
"I miss it," Julian admitted. "The quiet, the simplicity, the scent of the pine trees. My life here is... it's everything I thought I wanted, everything I fought for. But it's empty without you."
He reached across the table and took her hand again, his gaze intense.
"Marry me, Maya," Julian said, his voice low and steady. "Not because I'm a billionaire, not because I can give you a life of luxury. Marry me because I'm the man you fell in love with, the man who has loved you for half his life. Give me a second chance to be the husband I promised to be ten years ago."
Maya stared at him, her heart pounding in her chest. The proposal, unexpected and yet deeply desired, was the ultimate test of her love and her willingness to forgive. She looked from Julian to the ocean, the symbol of their history, and realized that the tides of time were moving forward, and she could either be swept along with them or remain anchored in the past.
"I can't give you an answer tonight," Maya said, her voice trembling. "This... this is a lot. But I will give you an answer tomorrow. On the beach, beneath the setting sun."
May you like
"I'll be waiting," Julian said, his voice filled with hope and Scout.
