Chapter 4 - The House on the Ridge**

The estate in the Blue Ridge Mountains looked less like a hideout and more like a modern fortress disguised as a luxury alpine lodge. Surrounded by dense pine forests and razor-wire fences hidden cleverly behind manicured hedges, the property was a masterpiece of slate, glass, and heavy timber.
For the first four days, Claire kept her distance. Even though Nico had set them up in a sprawling master suite with an adjoining playroom for the twins, she maintained a strict boundary. She ate meals with Mia and Finn, walked the pristine stone pathways of the courtyard while armed guards stood watch at a respectful distance, and slept with her bedroom door firmly locked against the man who had once been her entire universe.
Nico respected her space with agonizing patience. He didn't force his way into her room. He didn't demand affection. Instead, he spent hours sitting on the carpet of the playroom, letting Finn stack wooden blocks on his knee while Mia braided colorful plastic bands into his dark hair—a sight so incongruous with the ruthless mafia boss image that Claire often found herself staring from the doorway, her chest aching with complicated, unresolved feelings.
On the fifth evening, after the twins had finally fallen asleep in their custom beds, Claire sat alone on the massive stone balcony overlooking the misty mountain valley. A glass of aged cabernet sat untouched on the wrought-iron table beside her.
The sliding glass door clicked open, and Nico stepped out onto the balcony, holding a steaming mug of black coffee. He wore a simple charcoal crewneck sweater, the sleeves pushed up to his forearms, revealing the lean, powerful lines of his build.
"They're asleep," he said quietly, leaning his forearms against the stone railing beside her.
"Like logs," Claire murmured, not looking at him. "They love the playroom."
"They love their mother more," Nico replied. He turned his head, his amber eyes catching the moonlight. "You did an incredible job raising them, Claire. Even when you were terrified, even when you had nothing... they are bright, kind, and fearless. That’s because of you."
Claire swallowed hard, finally turning to meet his gaze. "Why didn't you check the security logs from that night, Nico? If you had looked at the house cameras, you would have known Renata drugged you immediately."
Nico closed his eyes, a deep, shuddering sigh escaping his lips. He set his coffee mug down on the table as if it required too much concentration to hold.
"I did check the logs," he confessed, his voice heavy with self-loathing. "Three days after you disappeared. But Renata had already paid off the head of my private security detail to wipe the master server for those four hours. By the time I realized the footage was corrupted, the corrupt guards were already at the bottom of the Atlantic, and Renata had vanished overseas."
He turned to face her fully, his hands gripping the edge of the stone railing so hard his knuckles turned white.
"I spent a thousand nights sitting in that empty Winnetka mansion, drinking until I couldn't feel my hands, hating myself for failing the only woman I ever loved," Nico whispered, his voice cracking with a vulnerability he had never shown another living soul. "I thought you left because you realized what I was—because you saw the monster behind the business suits and decided you couldn't live with blood on my hands. Losing you broke me, Claire. Everything else—the syndicates, the money, the power—it was all ash."
Claire felt a tear slip down her cheek. She reached out, her fingertips brushing against the back of his hand where it gripped the stone. The skin was warm, calloused, and trembling slightly—just like it had been on the rainy porch in West Virginia.
"I was so tired of being afraid, Nico," she whispered, her voice breaking. "Every time the phone rang, I thought it was someone coming to collect a debt in blood. I couldn't raise children in the middle of a war zone."
Nico turned his hand over, tangling his fingers with hers, holding on as if she were a lifeline he had been drowning without for three agonizing years.
"There is no war anymore," Nico swore, his amber eyes burning with fierce, absolute conviction. "I spent the last two years systematically dismantling the old alliances, turning Mercer Enterprises into a legitimate, international shipping conglomerate, and cutting ties with every violent faction in the Midwest. I am a businessman now, Claire. A father. And if you give me another chance... I will spend the rest of my life proving that you and these children are the only empire I will ever care about."
Before Claire could answer, the heavy double doors of the estate downstairs slammed open with a violent crash, followed by the sharp, metallic echo of a shotgun cocking and a frantic shout from the security detail in the foyer.
Nico’s entire demeanor shifted in a microsecond. The vulnerable, pleading husband vanished, replaced instantly by the apex predator who ruled the Chicago underworld.

"Stay inside," Nico ordered, his voice dropping into a lethal, glacial whisper as he pulled a concealed 9mm pistol from the small of his back with terrifying speed.
