Chapter 2 - The Secret of the Trust and the Past Celeste Tried to Bury

By midnight, Emma sat in the dimly lit study of her downtown penthouse, illuminating her laptop screen with the harsh blue glow of forensic accounting software. Her lawyer, Julian Vance—a ruthless corporate litigator with a reputation for destroying hostile takeovers—sat across the mahogany desk, reviewing the video file pulled directly from the Crown & Glimmer boutique server.
“The assault charge is open and shut, Emma,” Julian said, tapping his pen against the desk. “Between the 4K camera angle and the sworn affidavits from two independent shoppers who contacted my office an hour ago, Nathan is facing criminal battery charges. Combined with the forged share transfer document, we can freeze his corporate accounts by 9:00 AM.”
“Freezing his accounts is only step one, Julian,” Emma replied coldly, spinning her laptop around to face him. “Look at this metadata.”
Julian leaned in, squinting at the screen. “That’s an internal transfer receipt from six years ago. Originating from... the Sterling Family Trust.”
“My mother’s trust,” Emma confirmed. “The trust that legally protects fifty-one percent of Clark Industries, which my grandfather left directly to me on the condition that I maintain controlling interest until my twenty-ninth birthday—which is this coming Friday.”
Julian’s eyes widened. “If Nathan doesn't execute that forged transfer before Friday, the trust automatically locks, reverting all voting rights back to you permanently, and locking him out of the company forever. That’s why he had to get rid of you. But look at the routing number on this secondary transfer.”
Emma scrolled down to reveal a numbered offshore account in the Cayman Islands. “The funds from the forged transfer weren't just going into Nathan’s personal portfolio. They were being funneled directly to a shell corporation managed by Celeste Vance.”
Julian stared at the name, stunned. “Celeste? Wait... isn't she just a high-society socialite Nathan met at a charity gala two years ago?”
“That’s what Nathan thinks,” Emma said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “But I dug deeper into personnel records from ten years ago, back when my mother was still alive and running the philanthropic foundation. Celeste wasn't a socialite. She was my mother’s executive assistant. She managed the very filing cabinets where my grandfather’s physical estate papers were kept before my mother passed away under... mysterious circumstances.”
The pieces of the nightmare clicked violently into place. Celeste hadn't just accidentally seduced Nathan. She had engineered their entire marriage from the shadows, grooming Nathan to infiltrate the Sterling family business, manipulating him into marrying Emma, and orchestrating the long-term corporate heist to strip the Sterling family of its legacy.
Celeste knew every rule of the trust. She knew the exact deadline. She knew why Friday at midnight was the absolute point of no return.
“If Celeste was your mother’s assistant,” Julian muttered, “then she was there the night your father died in that yacht explosion off the coast of Maine.”
Emma froze. The mention of her father—Arthur Sterling, a brilliant shipping magnate whose body was never recovered when his private yacht burned to the waterline twenty years ago—sent a jagged spike of pain through her chest. She had spent her entire childhood mourning a ghost.
“My father’s death was ruled an accidental engine explosion,” Emma said softly, though doubt began to eat away at her core.
“Accidents can be engineered, Emma,” Julian warned grimly. “And if Celeste was involved in covering up financial irregularities back then, we’re not just dealing with a corporate fraud scheme. We’re dealing with something much darker.”
Before Julian could finish his sentence, the private security intercom on the wall buzzed sharply. The building lobby guard’s voice crackled through the speaker, frantic and breathless.

*“Mrs. Clark? I’m sorry to bother you so late, but... there’s a man downstairs in the lobby asking for you. He says he’s an old friend of your father’s, and he’s carrying something he insists you need to see before sunrise.”*
