Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Mask**

The silence that followed my words inside the neonate intensive care unit was absolute, broken only by the rhythmic, mechanical breathing of the incubators keeping my twins alive. Dominic stood paralyzed near the doorway, his hand resting on Natalie’s shoulder as the color completely drained from his face. The confident, predatory smirk that had defined his demeanor moments earlier vanished, replaced by a twitching panic that he tried desperately to mask.
“A bluff,” Dominic forced out, his voice cracking slightly as he managed an uneasy laugh. He looked toward Natalie, seeking reassurance, but she was staring intently at the hospital wall logo bearing the name Vale Health Network. “Your grandfather is a retired investor living quietly upstate, Emily. You’re grasping at straws because you lost.”
Before I could answer, the heavy double doors at the end of the NICU corridor burst open. A phalanx of four uniformed hospital security guards marched in, moving with military precision. Directly behind them strode a tall, imposing man in a tailored obsidian-gray suit. Though his hair was completely silver, his posture was rigid, and his sharp, piercing blue eyes scanned the room with terrifying authority.
It was Harrison Vale. My grandfather.
He didn’t look at Dominic. He didn’t look at Natalie. His gaze locked entirely on me sitting upright in the recovery chair, and then flickered toward the twin incubators behind glass. For a fraction of a second, the iron exterior of the billionaire patriarch cracked, revealing the fierce, protective love of a grandfather. Then, his face hardened back into stone as he stepped into the unit.
“Grandfather,” I said, my voice finally wavering with the release of the adrenaline that had sustained me.
“I’m here, Victoria,” my grandfather replied, his voice deep and resonant, echoing off the sterile tiles. He stopped a few feet from Dominic, towering over him by several inches. “Nurse Maya called my direct private line five minutes before you did. She told me someone was harassing my granddaughter and my newborn great-grandchildren.”
Dominic swallowed hard, his throat bobbing visibly. He straightened his tie, desperately trying to summon the corporate executive persona that had fooled me for years. “Mr. Vale... sir. I am Dominic Vance. CEO of Vance Medical Supply. There’s been a misunderstanding. Emily and I were simply finalizing amicable separation terms—”
“Amicable?” Harrison Vale interrupted, his tone cold enough to freeze liquid nitrogen. He reached out and snatched the divorce folder directly from Dominic’s unresisting hand. He flipped open the pages, his eyes scanning the predatory clauses, the complete asset stripping, and the deliberate misspelling of baby Chloe’s name.
Harrison’s jaw tightened. He turned the folder over, noting the signature I had just placed at the bottom. “You had her sign away her home, her livelihood, and her joint accounts while she was recovering from emergency cesarean surgery, standing four days post-partum next to her fragile infants? You thought you could bleed my family dry and throw my blood out onto the street?”
“Sir, the business partnership between Vance Supply and Saint Aurelia—” Dominic started to stammer, panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade.
“The business partnership between Vance Supply and Saint Aurelia is currently worth seventy percent of your annual revenue,” Harrison interrupted smoothly, pulling a sleek titanium smartphone from his breast pocket. He tapped the screen twice on speakerphone. “Legal department? This is Harrison Vale. Terminate all supply contracts with Vance Medical Supply effective immediately. Initiate a full audit of every invoice they have submitted to our network over the past three years for forensic fraud review.”
“No—Mr. Vale, you can’t do that! That will bankrupt us overnight!” Dominic shrieked, lunging forward as if to grab the phone, but two security guards stepped forward instantly, pinning his arms behind his back and forcing him against the wall.
Natalie let out a sharp, horrified gasp, stumbling backward until her designer heels clicked frantically against the floor. She stared at Dominic in utter disbelief, the reality of what they had done finally crashing down around them. The ivory cashmere coat—my ivory cashmere coat—swung loosely around her trembling shoulders, looking less like a trophy now and more like a badge of absolute shame.

My grandfather slid the signed divorce papers back into his pocket, looking down at Dominic with utter contempt. “You wanted an easy victory, Mr. Vance. You wanted to see how much a helpless woman could take. Now, you’re going to find out what happens when you wake a sleeping giant.”
