Chapter 3 - The Collapse of the Empire

"Ohio is lovely this time of year," I said softly, my voice cutting through the sound of the crashing waves like a razor blade. I slowly stood up from my chair, resting one hand protectively over my rounded stomach, and looked directly into my husband's wide, panicked eyes. "Though I have to admit, the view from Crescent Key is far more revealing."
Daniel stumbled forward, his hands trembling as he gripped the edge of the table. The smooth, arrogant corporate executive who commanded boardrooms in Manhattan was completely gone, replaced by a cornered animal staring down the barrel of total ruin. "Ava, listen to me," he stammered, his words tumbling over each other in a frantic rush. "This isn't what it looks like. It’s a business trip! Serena is just a colleague, we were reviewing marketing strategies for the hospitality division—"
"Marketing strategies," I repeated, letting out a cold, humorless laugh that made him flinch. I reached down, picked up the thick leather portfolio from the adjacent chair, and dropped it onto the center of the table with a heavy, definitive thud. "Is that what you call billing thirty thousand dollars in private jet charters, luxury resort stays, and diamond tennis bracelets to the Whitmore Holdings development fund? Are embezzlement and corporate fraud also part of your standard marketing playbook, Daniel?"
Serena stepped back, her face turning chalk-white as she stared at Daniel with absolute horror. "Embezzlement? What is she talking about, Dani? You told me your company owned this division! You said you had total control of the assets!"
"Shut up, Serena!" Daniel snapped, spinning around to face her before looking back at me with a desperate, pleading expression. "Ava, please. Let’s not do this here. Let’s go back to New York, we can talk about a quiet separation, we can divide the assets amicably—you don't want a public scandal, think of your family's name, think of—"
"Think of the baby?" I finished his sentence smoothly, stepping closer to him until the distance between us was barely two feet. I looked him dead in the eye, my gaze unyielding. "You called this child inconvenient, Daniel. You spent the last seven months ignoring my calls, sleeping in hotel suites with your mistress, and systematically draining accounts that you had no legal right to touch. You thought you could hide out on a private island and wait me out. But you made one fatal, arrogant mistake."
Daniel swallowed hard, his throat bobbing. "What... what mistake?"
I slowly reached into the portfolio, pulled out a single laminated document, and held it up under the flickering candlelight. "You never read the fine print on the island’s master deed."
May you like
His eyes widened as he read the bold header across the top of the page. Crescent Key Sole Proprietorship and Asset Holding Agreement. And right beneath it, printed in bold, unalterable black ink: Owner and Managing Director: Ava Monroe Whitmore.
"This island doesn't belong to your corporate shell company, Daniel," I whispered, my voice ringing with absolute authority. "It belongs to me. Every grain of sand, every stone of that villa, every security camera, and every single employee answers to my name. You didn't bring your mistress to a safe haven. You brought her straight into my trap."
