Chapter 5 - Reclaiming the Crown and the Sky

Six months later, the corporate world had entirely recalibrated.
The ashes of Vance Technologies had been swept away, replaced by Sterling Dynamics—a cutting-edge technological conglomerate officially owned, operated, and funded entirely under my independent leadership. We didn't just reclaim the thirteen core patents; we expanded them, revolutionized them, and partnered with ethical, visionary developers who understood that true innovation requires integrity, not arrogance.
Rowan had faded into the background of Seattle’s corporate history, reduced to a cautionary tale whispered by venture capitalists over expensive dinners—an overconfident founder who flew too close to the sun and forgot who engineered his wings.
On a crisp Saturday morning in early September, I stood once again on the private aviation tarmac of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The morning air was sharp and clean, carrying the crisp scent of pine and ocean salt.
Parked before me on the shimmering asphalt was a brand-new, custom-configured Gulfstream G700—sleek, pearl-white, and bearing the proud golden insignia of Sterling Holdings emblazoned across its tailfin.
Marcus, the senior flight operations manager who had bowed to me on this very tarmac months ago, stood waiting at the base of the rolling stairs, holding a silver boarding folder.
“Everything is prepped for your departure to the Geneva Global Innovation Summit, Mrs. Sterling,” Marcus said with a respectful, genuine smile. “The flight crew is on board, and the airspace clearance is fully secured.”
I smiled, adjusting my sunglasses as I looked up at the pristine aircraft.
“Thank you, Marcus,” I said smoothly.
I climbed the steps, pausing for a brief moment on the threshold to look back at the sprawling horizon. The sky was infinite, wide, and entirely open. This time, I wasn't sitting in row five, and I wasn't sneaking around trying to earn someone else's approval. I owned the plane, I owned the route, and most importantly, I was the one flying the entire journey.

I stepped inside, settling comfortably into the oversized leather captain's chair in the primary executive lounge, and pulled out my tablet. As the cabin door sealed shut with a satisfying, airtight thud, the engines spooled up with a powerful, steady roar.
I looked out the window as the jet smoothly taxied toward the active runway. Let the world keep spinning, let new empires rise and fall—I was finally right where I belonged, soaring far above the clouds, completely untouchable.
