Chapter 3 - Lillian’s Awakening and the Betrayal Unmasked**

By the following afternoon, the heavy dose of sedatives had worn off, and Lillian’s eyes fluttered open under the soft lights of the intensive care room. Charles stood quietly by the bedside, holding her frail hand as she took her first unassisted breaths in over twenty-four hours.

“Charles...?” she whispered hoarsely, her voice barely audible above the hum of the heart monitor.

“I’m right here, Lillian,” Charles said softly, squeezing her fingers. “You’re safe. You’re in the hospital.”

Tears welled up in her weary eyes as fragments of the previous night rushed back into her memory. “The... the burning on my chest... I felt like I was drowning in my own skin. Warren... Warren gave me that new vitamin patch yesterday morning. He said it was a special herbal booster for my chronic fatigue... He applied it to my shoulder himself before I went out.”

Charles’s heart hammered against his ribs. Warren hadn't just slipped it to her secretly; he had applied the lethal Dexopraline transdermal patch to her skin with his own hands, disguising it as a harmless wellness supplement, knowing full well it would trigger a catastrophic, fatal anaphylactic shock within hours.

“Lillian,” Charles said gently, leaning closer, “I need you to listen to me very carefully. Warren knew about your allergy. He has known for thirty years.”

The words hung in the sterile air like falling glass. Lillian stared at him, the devastating reality crashing down upon her soul with far more force than the physical poison ever could. Her lower lip quivered, and a single tear slipped silently down her pale cheek.

“He... he wanted me gone,” she whispered, her voice breaking into a dry sob. “All those years... building a life together... and he planned my execution like filling a prescription.”

“You’re going to get justice, Lillian,” Detective Morales said, stepping quietly out from behind the privacy curtain with an audio recording device in her hand. “And we are going to need your help to trap him.”

An hour later, Warren Prescott returned to the hospital, carrying a small bouquet of expensive white lilies and wearing his trademark sympathetic smile. He pushed open the ICU door, stepping softly toward the bed.

“Lillian, my love... thank God you’re awake,” Warren breathed, leaning down as if to kiss her forehead.

Lillian turned her head away slightly, her eyes locking onto his with a cold, piercing intensity that made Warren freeze mid-motion.

“Warren,” Lillian said, her voice steady and clear. “Why did you tell me that Dexopraline patch was a vitamin booster?”

Warren’s smile instantly evaporated. The bouquet of lilies shook slightly in his hand. “What... what are you talking about, sweetheart? You must be confused from the medication.”

“I’m not confused at all,” Lillian replied, her gaze unyielding. “Charles showed me the patch. And Detective Morales has the pharmacy distribution records linking the serial number directly to your private safe at the downtown branch.”

The door to the ICU room clicked open, and Detective Morales stepped forward, flanked by two uniformed county deputies.

“Warren Prescott, you are under arrest for attempted premeditated murder, insurance fraud, and criminal conspiracy,” Teresa announced, her voice ringing clear as she slapped steel handcuffs onto the pharmacist’s immaculate wrists.

Warren didn't fight. He didn't yell. He simply stared at Charles with a look of pure, venomous hatred as the deputies hauled him out of the room. But the nightmare for the conspirators was only just beginning.
