Chapter 5 - A New Dawn for Naval Intelligence**

A week after the tribunal, the morning sun broke brightly over the Atlantic coastline, casting a golden hue across the pier at Naval Station Norfolk.
The air was crisp and salty, carrying the distant hum of carrier engines warming up in the harbor. I stood near the edge of the pier in my service whites, a warm cup of black coffee in my hand, watching the whitecaps roll gently against the concrete pilings.
My bruised ribs had mostly healed, leaving only a dull, faint ache that served as a permanent reminder of the morning everything changed.
Footsteps approached from behind, steady and purposeful.
“You’re hard to keep track of, Commander Callahan,” a familiar, warm voice said.
I turned around to see Admiral Bennett walking toward me, holding a manila folder under his arm. He didn't look like a distant, intimidating commander right now; he looked like a mentor who had watched a protégé weather a massive storm and come out the other side stronger.
“Just catching the morning air, Admiral,” I smiled, taking a sip of my coffee. “And double-checking the logistics manifests for the Atlantic fleet.”
Bennett laughed softly, stopping beside me to look out over the vast expanse of the ocean. “I’m sure you are. Though I suspect you won’t have to worry about local corruption for quite a while. The Department of Defense has officially greenlit your proposal for a nationwide internal audit division. They want you at the head of it.”
I raised an eyebrow, genuinely surprised. “Head of the entire Joint Oversight Bureau?”
“That’s right,” Bennett nodded, handing me the manila folder. “Full operational autonomy, direct reporting line to the Secretary of Defense, and your own hand-picked team of operatives. No more hiding behind desk work or undercover logistics tracking. You’ll have the authority to tear out corruption wherever it hides in the armed forces.”
I opened the folder, reading the crisp, formal appointment orders printed on official Department of Defense letterhead. My name was typed boldly at the top: Commander Erin Callahan, Director of Special Investigations.
“It’s a big responsibility,” I murmured, though a fierce, quiet excitement began to bubble up inside my chest.
“It is,” Bennett agreed, his expression turning serious. “Because there will always be bullies in this world, Erin. Men like Reed who think their badges, their medals, and their physical strength make them untouchable. They think they can push people around because they mistake quiet professionalism for weakness.”
He turned his head and looked directly into my eyes, a proud smile touching the corners of his mouth.
“But you proved that the strongest weapon in the United States military isn't a rifle or a pair of fists. It’s a sharp mind, unshakeable discipline, and the courage to hold the powerful accountable.”
I closed the folder, tucked it securely under my arm, and took one final sip of my coffee before tossing the empty paper cup into the recycling bin nearby.
“When do we start?” I asked.

Bennett smiled. “Tomorrow morning, Director. Tomorrow morning.”
I turned back toward the horizon, watching a grey Navy destroyer glide smoothly out of the harbor, cutting cleanly through the deep blue water. My past life as a quiet, underestimated logistics officer was officially behind me. Ahead lay a new chapter—one where no corrupt soldier, arrogant SEAL, or dirty commander would ever dare underestimate me again.
