Chapter 4 - The Delivery Room Justice**

The fluorescent lights of the hospital delivery room buzzed softly as contractions washed over me in intense, rhythmic waves of pressure and heat. It was two weeks after the boardroom coup, and the stress of Ryan’s downfall had inadvertently triggered early labor. My mother held a cool, damp cloth against my forehead, while my brother stood by the door ready to fetch the medical staff.

Outside the private maternity wing, Ryan’s life was completely unraveling. Following his dramatic removal from the corporate headquarters in handcuffs, he had been released on a steep bond funded by liquidating what little personal property he had left. Bennett Logistics had stripped him of his title, his salary, his stock options, and his company car. Worse still, Vanessa Cole had vanished the moment his bank accounts were frozen by federal marshals, leaving behind a brief text message stating she didn't sign up to date a criminal facing federal prison time.

Ryan had spent days calling my mother’s house, begging, crying, and screaming through the intercom system for a second chance, claiming he had learned his lesson and blaming Vanessa for casting a spell over him. I had blocked his number within five minutes of leaving the house.

“Clara, dilation is at ten centimeters. The baby is ready. Let’s push,” Dr. Evans instructed gently, looking down at me with encouraging eyes.

I gripped the metal rails of the hospital bed, channeling every ounce of lingering anger, betrayal, and exhaustion into raw strength. I thought of the night he brought his mistress into our dining room. I thought of the cold arrogance in his voice when he told me I wouldn't last a week without him. And then I pushed with every fiber of my being.

A sharp, beautiful, piercing cry echoed through the sterile room.

Dr. Evans smiled broadly, lifting a squirming, healthy baby girl wrapped in a soft pink blanket and placing her directly onto my chest. She had a full head of dark hair, tiny button fingers, and a strong, vibrant heartbeat that synchronized instantly with my own. Tears of pure, unadulterated joy spilled down my cheeks as I kissed her forehead over and over again.

“She’s perfect,” my mother wept softly, stroking my hair.

Just as the nurses were cleaning up the room and settling us in, the door swung open.

Standing in the doorway was Ryan. He looked hollowed out—his expensive suit rumpled, his hair unwashed, the aura of invincibility completely shattered. He had somehow slipped past hospital security, desperate to see his child, hoping a newborn baby might serve as a ticket back into my good graces.

“Clara... please,” Ryan choked out, taking a tentative step toward the bed, his eyes glassy with unshed tears. “Let me see my daughter. I’m her father—”

“You lost the right to call yourself a father the day you treated our family like disposable collateral,” I said, my voice cold, calm, and absolute. I clutched our baby tighter against my chest, shielding her from his presence. “Security!”

Within seconds, two hospital security guards materialized in the doorway, grabbing Ryan by both arms.

“No! Clara, you can't keep me away from my child! I’ll fight you in court!” he screamed, thrashing as they dragged him backward out into the hallway, his desperate cries fading into the sterile distance until the heavy doors clicked shut.

I looked down at my baby girl, breathing in her sweet newborn scent. The nightmare was finally over.
