Chapter 4 - Rebuilding from the Ashes**

Three weeks after the arrests, the frantic media storm surrounding the Paradise Valley elite scandal had slowly begun to fade into the background noise of the local news cycle. My parents' sprawling estate was officially seized by federal marshals, scheduled for a public liquidation auction to help reimburse the pension fund they had plundered. Brianna had retreated to a cheap motel across town, desperately attempting to salvage her shattered influencer career while facing her own accessory charges for utilizing stolen credit accounts.

I sat at my home office desk in downtown Phoenix, sipping a cup of hot coffee while reviewing the final corporate restructuring documents for my father's defunct trucking company. With Samantha's forensic accounting assistance, we had successfully restructured the healthy logistics assets away from Benedict's fraudulent umbrella, preserving the jobs of hundreds of innocent union workers and restructuring the enterprise under a clean, employee-owned cooperative model.

My left cheek still bore a faint, pinkish scar beneath the healing skin, but the pain had long since faded, replaced by an overwhelming sense of profound liberation.

Christopher walked into the office, carrying a large cardboard box filled with old family photo albums and mementos that Samantha had rescued from the estate before the marshals locked it down permanently. He set the box gently on the floor and walked over to wrap his arms around my shoulders from behind, pressing a soft kiss against my temple.

"How are the asset recovery audits looking?" Christopher asked quietly, resting his chin on my head.

"Better than expected," I smiled, leaning back against him. "Federal restitution is moving faster because my parents' offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands were tied directly to their personal social security numbers. The financial trail was practically gift-wrapped for the investigators."

"Good," Christopher murmured. "Because I was thinking about a few things that don't involve federal indictments or corporate debt restructuring."

I turned slightly in my chair, raising an eyebrow with a playful smile. "Oh? And what might that be?"

"Well," he said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small velvet box that he had temporarily retrieved after the chaotic night of our engagement party. "Since our first attempt at celebrating our engagement was interrupted by a flying brick and a family of sociopaths, I figured we deserved a proper restart. No crowds, no cameras, and absolutely no family members within a five-hundred-mile radius."

My heart swelled. I opened the velvet box to reveal the diamond ring that had sat untouched in our safe through weeks of federal depositions and court hearings.

"I thought you'd never ask," I whispered, pulling him down into a long, deep kiss that erased every lingering shadow of the past.
