Chapter 1 - The Weight of Five Lost Years

The air inside the custom-built Gulfstream G700 was thick with the scent of expensive Tom Ford cologne and French champagne, but Alonzo Vega felt as though he were slowly suffocating. Sitting in the luxurious cream leather seat, his eyes were locked on the forward partition where the cockpit door had just clicked shut. Just moments ago, his entire reality had fractured into sharp, jagged pieces.

Five years.

Five years of believing he had successfully pruned away the messy, inconvenient chapters of his past to clear a path for his corporate ascension. When Alonzo had walked out on Sophia Torres, he had left behind a twenty-eight-year-old aerospace engineer with starry-eyed ambitions, convinced she would be nothing more than a minor footnote in his biography. He had left a crisp note on the marble kitchen counter, transferred a modest severance sum to an account she rarely used, and instructed his corporate security team to reroute any incoming calls. To Alonzo, it wasn't a cruel betrayal; it was a cold, calculated business realignment. He was a man destined for high society, global portfolios, and dynastic alliances—not domestic stagnation.

Yet, looking through that open doorway just minutes before, he hadn't seen the quiet, submissive woman he abandoned. He had seen Captain Sophia Torres. Four gold stripes glinting on her shoulders, hair bound in an immaculate knot, her eyes radiating a cold, impenetrable steel that made his spine freeze.

And then there was Leo.

The five-year-old boy in the toy pilot's cap. The exact same dark brown eyes that stared back at Alonzo every morning in the mirror. The unmistakable indentation in the chin. His son. A flesh-and-blood heir he never knew existed, brought into the world in secret, nurtured and raised completely outside of his multi-million-dollar orbit.

Beside him, Khloe Winters shifted restlessly, snapping open her compact mirror to check her makeup. The expensive coral lipstick she wore suddenly looked sickeningly garish to him.

"Alonzo, seriously, what is wrong with you?" Khloe demanded, her voice dropping into that shrill, petulant whine he usually found charmingly dependent. "You look like you just saw a ghost. Is it something with the merger? Did Sterling back out of the New York development?"

Alonzo didn't answer. He couldn't. His mind was racing through an impossible labyrinth of logistics, betrayal, and sudden, blinding terror. If Sophia was the captain of this chartered aircraft, it wasn't a coincidence. Nothing in Sophia's world happened by accident anymore. The woman who once sketched wing designs on napkins while eating instant ramen had somehow clawed her way to the top of corporate aviation, earned her stripes, and positioned herself directly in his flight path.

Then his phone buzzed against his thigh.

A single, silent vibration.

He pulled it out with trembling fingers. The screen lit up with a text message from the same anonymous sender who had tipped him off three minutes before takeoff:

If you want to know why this happened today, ask your mother.

Alonzo’s blood ran cold. His mother, Eleanor Vega—a woman whose devotion to social status bordered on religious fanaticism. Eleanor had despised Sophia from the day they met, calling her "common" and "unsuited for a Vega." Could Eleanor have known about the pregnancy? Could she have paid Sophia off, orchestrated the silence, and kept his own child hidden from him just to protect the family lineage from a woman she deemed unworthy?

Before Alonzo could process the horrifying implications, the cabin lights dimmed slightly. The twin Rolls-Royce engines hummed beneath the floorboards, transitioning from a low idle to a powerful, high-pitched whine as the aircraft began its steady pushback from the private hangar at Teterboro.

Across the aisle, visible through the small partition window, Leo was sitting happily with a flight attendant, flipping through an aviation picture book. Every time the boy smiled, Alonzo felt a physical blow to his chest. That was his blood. His legacy. A child he had dismissed as collateral damage in his climb to the top.

The jet taxied smoothly onto the active runway. The captain’s voice crackled over the cabin intercom, cool, professional, and entirely devoid of human warmth.

"Cabin secure. Flight plan cleared direct to Palm Beach. Flight time, two hours and thirty minutes. Cabin crew, please prepare for takeoff."

Alonzo gripped the armrests of his seat so hard his knuckles turned white. He knew Sophia. He knew that icy, unyielding tone. She wasn't just flying an airplane; she was flying a missile straight into the heart of everything he had built. And as the jet surged forward down the tarmac, pressing him back into his seat with crushing G-force, Alonzo realized with absolute terror that he was no longer the one in control.
