Chapter 2 - The Trapped Fortress**

The jingling of my car keys in the hallway felt like a death knell echoing in the small, tiled bathroom. They weren't just locking me inside the room; they were locking me out of the outside world, stripping away my only immediate means of escape.
"Listen to me, ma'am," the 911 dispatcher's voice whispered calmly through the earpiece. "Police units have just been dispatched to your location with priority emergency status. Stay inside the bathroom, keep yourself and your baby low, and do not unlock that door under any circumstances."
"They have my keys," I whispered back, hot tears spilling down my swollen cheeks. "They took my car keys. I can't leave."
"Officers will secure the perimeter the moment they arrive. Help is almost there. Just hold on."
Outside the door, Derek and his mother were no longer whispering. They had shifted into full operational panic mode, realizing that if the police arrived, their carefully constructed suburban facade would crumble.
"Open this door right now, or I'm kicking it off the hinges!" Derek bellowed, his voice losing its calm veneer and returning to feral fury. He threw his shoulder against the door. The wood groaned loudly, and a spiderweb of cracks splintered outward from the deadbolt lock.
I screamed, instinctively curling my entire body around my baby in the bathtub, using my back as a shield against potential flying debris.
"Derek, stop! You'll wake the neighborhood!" his mother hissed in the background. "Just tell the police she fell! Tell them she’s postpartum and hallucinating!"
"Shut up, Mom! She’s on the phone with someone, I can hear her whispering!" Derek roared, slamming his heavy work boot directly into the paneling beside the doorknob.
A loud crack echoed through the room as the wood split open, exposing the dark hallway beyond.
I saw the shadow of his hand reach through the splintered gap, clawing blindly at the air, trying to find the thumb-turn of the deadbolt. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. My shoulder throbbed with excruciating pain, but I scrambled forward on my knees, grabbed the heavy porcelain soap dispenser from the edge of the sink, and hurled it with all my might straight at the gap in the door.
It hit Derek’s fingers with a sickening thud. He shrieked in agony, pulling his hand back out of the opening with a torrent of curses.
"You crazy bitch! I'm going to destroy you!" he screamed, kicking the door again with reckless abandon.
Inside the tub, my little boy woke up and began wailing with a piercing, terror-stricken cry that tore right through my soul. I rocked him frantically, pressing my lips to his soft forehead, whispering desperate reassurances that I wouldn't let anyone touch him.
Suddenly, the frantic pounding outside stopped.
A heavy silence fell over the hallway.
For a terrifying second, I thought Derek had broken the lock completely and was about to burst in. But then I heard muffled voices shouting from the downstairs foyer.
*“Police! County Sheriff! Open the front door immediately!”*
The sound of heavy tactical boots storming up our hardwood staircase echoed like rolling thunder.
Outside our bedroom door, Derek’s mother squealed in shock. "What are you doing here?! We didn't call—!"
"County Sheriff's Office! Step away from the door and put your hands behind your head right now!" a deep, authoritative voice commanded with zero room for argument.
I heard the frantic scuffle of boots, the sharp click of handcuffs snapping into place, and Derek shouting protests that were instantly cut off by a deputy shoving him against the wall.

"Mrs. Miller?" a female officer’s voice called out through the splintered bathroom door, gentle yet firm. "Are you in there? It's Deputy Vance. You're safe now. We have the suspects detained."
My knees gave out completely. I unlocked the deadbolt, pulled the broken door open a few inches, and collapsed onto the bathroom floor, holding my baby tightly against my chest as the bright, welcoming light of the hallway washed over us.
