Chapter 2 - The Sapphire Room at Aurum House**

By 8:40 p.m., the crisp Manhattan evening had turned into a biting, sub-zero wind that swept down Madison Avenue, but inside Aurum House, the climate was warm, exclusive, and dripping with old-money indulgence. Aurum House was one of the most fiercely guarded private luxury clubs in the city—a members-only sanctuary where champagne cost more than an average monthly mortgage and absolute privacy was sold by the bottle.

Daniel had reserved the ultra-exclusive Sapphire Room to celebrate his freedom, using my company’s corporate membership credentials, which he had selfishly failed to remove from his active portfolio before our accounts were formally decoupled. He wanted to impress Vanessa, show off his new lifestyle, and celebrate what he believed was a multi-million-dollar financial victory over his naive ex-wife.

The table was already littered with an extravagant display of culinary excess: imported Beluga caviar, a towering ice sculpture cradling massive Wagyu beef towers, two rare bottles of 1982 Château Lafite Rothschild, and glittering diamond-dust cocktails that shimmered under the dim, romantic amber lighting. A private string quartet played softly in the corner of the mahogany-paneled room, adding a layer of pretentious theatricality to the evening.

Vanessa was glowing, swirling her champagne flute while admiring the private jewelry boutique display that Aurum House maintained exclusively for its ultra-wealthy clientele. The club allowed members to browse high-end luxury pieces privately without ever leaving the building, charging purchases directly to whichever linked account was presented on file.

“Oh, Daniel, look at this,” Vanessa breathed, her eyes locking onto a magnificent white-gold necklace set with a massive, untreated Ceylon sapphire surrounded by cascading diamond baguettes. “It’s exquisite. It looks like it belongs in a museum.”

Daniel puffed out his chest, basking in the adoration like a king surveying his conquered territory. He had spent the last three hours drinking expensive Bordeaux and convincing himself that his impending corporate promotion—and my corporate accounts—would easily cover whatever impulsive desires his new mistress possessed.

“If you like it, it’s yours,” Daniel declared with a grand, sweeping gesture of his hand, signaling the senior floor captain. “We’ll take it. Wrap it up.”

The floor captain bowed respectfully, retrieving the velvet display tray. “An excellent choice, Mr. Whitmore. That particular piece is priced at six hundred and forty thousand dollars. Shall I combine that with your dining and entertainment tab for the evening?”

“Combine it all,” Daniel waved dismissively, not even blinking at the jaw-dropping sum. “Put it on the black card. You know the one.”

The captain accepted the matte-black corporate card with a white-gloved hand and walked briskly toward the private terminal behind the mahogany bar.

Daniel leaned back against the plush velvet banquette, wrapping his arm around Vanessa’s waist as she planted a loud, celebratory kiss on his cheek. “See, V? I told you. Everything is falling into place. Emily was an anchor holding me down. Now, there’s nothing stopping us.”

Three agonizingly long minutes passed.

The string quartet finished a movement, leaving a sudden, heavy quiet hanging over the Sapphire Room. The floor captain walked back toward the table, but his posture had stiffened noticeably, and the polite, welcoming smile had completely vanished from his face.

He stopped a few feet away, looking down at the floor with visible discomfort.

“Mr. Whitmore,” the captain said quietly, pitching his voice so the rest of the room couldn't overhear. “I’m... I’m terribly sorry, sir. But the primary transaction failed to authorize.”

Daniel frowned, his arrogant smirk faltering slightly as he took a sip of his wine. “Failed? That’s ridiculous. It’s an unlimited corporate liquidity line. Run it again. You probably swiped the chip incorrectly.”

The captain swallowed hard, his hands trembling slightly as he clutched the silver transaction tray. “We ran it three times, sir. The gateway rejected the authorization code instantly.”

“Fine,” Daniel snapped, his face flushing with sudden irritation as Vanessa’s smile tightened into a nervous line. “Then use the backup card. I have three secondary liquidity backups linked to that profile. Charge one of those.”

May you like

The captain’s eyes dropped to the floor. “Sir… all linked cards associated with this profile have been abruptly cancelled, restricted, or re-authenticated with new security tokens within the last six hours. None of them are responding.”
