Chapter 2 - The Gift Inside the Folder**

Marcus blinked down at the heavy blue folder, a flicker of nervous confusion crossing his face for the first time. He had expected tears, shouting, or at least a bitter argument that he could easily bulldoze through with his usual manipulative rhetoric. He certainly hadn't expected cooperation.
"What is this?" Marcus asked, his fingers hesitating against the embossed gold lettering of the legal binder.
"Open it," I urged quietly, leaning back against the kitchen island and crossing my arms over my chest. "Consider it my parting contribution to the family."
Beatrice leaned in eagerly over his shoulder, her sharp breath hissing as Marcus flipped open the cover. The top document wasn't a bank statement or a sentimental family photograph. It was a formal, stamped accounting ledger detailing every single financial transaction tied to Vextor Holdings—Marcus’s private real estate investment firm, which he had constantly bragged about funding entirely through his own business acumen.
Except, the ledger showed a very different story.
"What... what am I looking at?" Marcus stammered, his eyes darting frantically across the columns of numbers, wire transfers, and corporate routing codes. "Where did you get these statements?"
"From every business account you’ve tried to hide over the past three years," I answered smoothly. "You always complained that my career as a senior forensic accountant kept me working late at the office, Marcus. You never once wondered what I was actually analyzing on my dual monitors."
Marcus went entirely gray. The color drained from his face so fast it looked like someone had pulled a plug in his veins. His hands began to shake, rattling the heavy legal paper against the wooden table.
Beatrice snatched a page from his grip, squinting at the fine print. "What is the meaning of this? Why are there millions of dollars listed here under offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands? Marcus, explain this right now!"
"Because," I answered before Marcus could choke out a lie, "your beloved, brilliant son hasn't just been supporting Sebastian's gambling debts. Marcus has been embezzling corporate client escrow funds to cover his own catastrophic stock market losses. For the last eighteen months, every single high-end luxury trip, every designer watch you love to flash at your country club, Beatrice, and every dollar sent to bail out Sebastian has been stolen directly from third-party real estate trust accounts."
The kitchen grew so quiet you could hear the distant hum of the refrigerator. Marcus looked up at me, his eyes wide with stark, unadulterated terror. The arrogant, untouchable husband was entirely gone, replaced by a cornered animal realizing he was caught in a steel trap.
"You... you audited my firm?" he whispered, his voice cracking. "Camila, tell me you didn't share these with anyone else."
I reached out and gently tapped the corner of the folder. "Every document in that binder has already been digitally transmitted to your firm's primary board of directors, the federal securities regulatory commission, and my personal legal counsel. The forensic audit is complete, airtight, and completely irreversible."
Beatrice slammed her hand down on the table, her face flushing a furious, mottled purple. "You treacherous bitch! You've ruined your own husband! If Marcus goes down, your household income disappears! You're destroying your own life just to spite us!"
"My life?" I smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that reached my eyes for the first time in half a year. "Beatrice, my name isn't even on the corporate liability documents. And as for my income? I make more in a quarter than Marcus has legitimately earned in three years. Furthermore..." I paused, letting the suspense hang heavy in the air, "the apartment in New York was sold under an irrevocable family trust established by my mother before she passed. Those 8 million dollars? Not a single cent of it belongs to community property laws. It is safely locked away in an offshore asset protection trust that Marcus cannot touch, cannot sue for, and cannot steal."
May you like
Marcus stumbled backward, his knees hitting the kitchen barstool, collapsing onto it as the full, devastating weight of my words crushed him completely.
