Chapter 2 - The Envelope That Shattered the Past

The name scrawled across the front of the yellowed envelope wasn't Damon Prescott.
It was Julian Vance.
Damon’s breath caught in his throat as if he had been struck in the solar plexus. Julian Vance—the billionaire venture capitalist, Damon’s fiercest corporate rival, and the man who had tried to execute a hostile takeover of Prescott Technologies two years prior. Julian was a ruthless, predatory mogul known for crushing anything and anyone that stood in his path.
“What is this?” Damon snarled, his voice rising sharply enough to cause a passing flight attendant to pause in the aisle. He quickly lowered his tone, his fingers digging into the paper until it nearly ripped. “Why is Julian Vance’s name on an envelope you were carrying when you hid my children from me for three years?”
Cassandra flinched, pulling the children slightly closer to her chest as Luke and Violet watched the exchange with wide, confused eyes.
“Keep your voice down, Damon,” Cassandra pleaded, a tear finally spilling over her lashes and cutting a clean path down her pale cheek. “Please. If you want to hate me, if you want to scream at me, do it after the flight lands. But don't scare them.”
Damon stared at her, his chest heaving with a suffocating mixture of rage, heartbreak, and desperate confusion. He looked down at the envelope again. The postmark date stamped in the corner read December 23, three years ago—the exact week Cassandra had vanished from his life.
“Open it,” Damon commanded quietly, his slate-gray eyes boring into hers with an intensity that brooked no argument.
Cassandra’s trembling fingers slid beneath the flap of the envelope and pulled out a single sheet of heavy, embossed cardstock bearing the private letterhead of Vance Capital. She handed it across the narrow aisle to Damon.
Damon’s eyes scanned the typed words, and with every sentence he read, the ground beneath his feet seemed to crumble further away:
> Miss Hayes,
> As of 8:00 AM today, your father’s medical debts, his failing clinic, and your brother’s legal defense fund have been successfully settled in full by my firm. In exchange for this financial salvation, you will terminate all contact with Damon Prescott immediately, vacate the city of Boston within twenty-four hours, and never inform him of your pregnancy. Should you attempt to contact him, or breathe a single word of this arrangement, the debt guarantees will be instantly revoked, and your family will face immediate, total financial ruin and criminal prosecution.
> — Julian Vance.
The cabin air grew impossibly thin. Damon read the letter three times, every word burning into his retinas like branding iron.
Three years ago, just as Prescott Technologies was securing its very first round of seed funding, Damon had been completely broke, working ninety-hour weeks out of a freezing garage. He had no money, no connections, and no safety net. Julian Vance had known about Cassandra’s pregnancy before Damon even did. Julian had intercepted her, weaponized her family’s desperate medical crises, and orchestrated an airtight, extortionist exile to break Damon’s spirit and eliminate a rising competitor before he could build a stable foundation.
“You traded us away,” Damon whispered, his voice trembling not with anger at Cassandra, but with a cold, apocalyptic fury directed entirely at the man sitting in a high-rise office in Manhattan. “You left me because he threatened your family.”
“What else could I do, Damon?!” Cassandra whispered fiercely, her voice cracking with the unbearable weight of a secret she had carried in isolation for thirty-six months. “My father was dying of kidney failure on a cot in a county hospital! My brother was facing ten years in prison for a corporate setup he didn't commit! Julian walked into that hospital room like a god holding life and death in his hands. He told me that if I stayed with you, you would be dragged down into our family’s wreckage before your company even launched. He said he would destroy you, destroy us, and make sure our children were born into poverty.”
She looked down at Luke and Violet, her voice breaking completely.
“I didn't leave because I stopped loving you, Damon. I left so you could survive. I left so you could build the empire you deserved.”
Damon sat in absolute, terrifying silence. The pieces of the puzzle slammed together with the brutal precision of a guillotine. The sudden disappearance. The lack of forwarding addresses. The cold wall she had put up. She had martyred herself, sacrificing her own happiness, her love, and her dignity to protect him from a monster.
And now, Julian Vance was about to make his final, most devastating move.
Before Damon could speak, his phone buzzed again. It was an urgent text from his chief legal counsel in Denver: Damon, emergency update. Merritt Systems just leaked that Julian Vance has secretly acquired a controlling block of their voting shares through a shell company. If you sign the $780 million merger tonight, you aren't beating Merritt—you are walking directly into a trap engineered by Julian. He’s going to bankrupt Prescott Technologies by morning.
Damon looked down at the letter in his hand, then across at the woman who had endured three years of hell to keep his children safe, and finally at Luke and Violet, who were resting their sleepy heads against Cassandra’s shoulders.
The $780 million deal was a trap. Julian Vance wanted to destroy Damon’s company, steal his wealth, and leave him with nothing.
A slow, lethal smile touched the corners of Damon’s mouth. Julian thought he was playing chess. He thought he had trapped the orphan from the Boston garage.
