Chapter 3 - The Secret Archive**

“The authorities?!” Eleanor shrieked, her aristocratic composure completely shattering as she pounded her fists against Mateo’s solid chest. “You are threatening your employer? I will have every single one of you sued, blacklisted, and thrown out onto the street before the hour is through!”
“Go ahead and try,” a cool, calm voice interrupted from the front of the hallway.
We all turned. Standing at the doorway connecting the dining room to the service hall was Detective Sarah Jenkins of the local precinct, dressed in plain clothes with her shield clipped conspicuously to her belt. Behind her stood two uniformed patrol officers.
Color drained completely from Eleanor’s face. Marcus began pounding on the storeroom door again, shouting muffled demands for his mother to let him out.
Detective Jenkins walked slowly down the hall, her sharp eyes taking in every detail: my broken, bleeding nose, the tear-stained baby cradled against my chest, the frightened kitchen staff, and Eleanor standing cornered by the office desk.
“We received an anonymous 911 dispatch regarding a domestic assault and unlawful imprisonment at this address,” Detective Jenkins announced smoothly, stopping a few feet away from Eleanor. “Mrs. Sterling, I suggest you step away from that file box. We have reason to believe it contains documents relevant to an ongoing investigation into financial fraud and child endangerment involving this property.”
“Fraud? Endangered children? This is an outrage!” Eleanor screamed, her voice cracking. “That girl fell down the stairs because she’s clumsy! Her husband was just trying to help her!”
“Is that so?” Detective Jenkins raised an eyebrow, turning her gaze toward me. “Ms. Rachel, is that what happened?”
I looked down at my sleeping son, took a deep, steadying breath, and lifted my chin. The fear that had paralyzed me six days ago was entirely gone, burned away by rage and maternal instinct.
“No, Detective,” I said clearly, my voice ringing out across the quiet service hall. “My husband, Marcus Sterling, dragged me by my hair down a flight of stairs because our infant son’s crying woke his mother. My mother-in-law threw my newborn onto a couch like an object. And as for what’s in that file box... they’ve been planning to strip me of my parental rights and institutionalize me for weeks so they could seize my personal inheritance and keep me trapped in this restaurant.”
Detective Jenkins nodded slowly. She motioned to the uniformed officers. “Arrest Marcus Sterling for domestic battery and unlawful imprisonment. And secure that office desk—we’re executing an immediate search warrant.”
Within seconds, the storeroom door was unlocked, and Marcus was yanked out into the hallway, his designer cuffs clicked together behind his back as he cursed and spat empty threats at the officers. Eleanor attempted to block the doorway to the office, but Detective Jenkins gently yet firmly pushed her aside, pried open the locked metal file box, and pulled out a thick stack of documents.
The detective flipped through the first few pages, her eyes widening. She pulled out a pre-signed, forged psychiatric evaluation form, a draft of a fabricated custody relinquishment agreement, and—most shockingly—certified bank statements showing that Marcus and Eleanor had systematically drained my pre-marital trust fund account to bail out the failing restaurant.
Detective Jenkins looked up from the papers, locking her gaze onto Eleanor.

“Well, Mrs. Sterling,” the detective said coldly. “It looks like you didn't just plan a domestic dispute. You built an entire paper trail for a felony kidnapping and financial conspiracy.”
