Chapter 4 - The Trap Closes

Panic erupted inside the grand ballroom like a bomb going off. High-society donors scrambled toward the exits, whispering in horror as the drone footage looped continuously, broadcasting Michael’s cold-blooded crime to the entire city’s elite.
On the stage, Michael stood paralyzed, his eyes wide with stark, unadulterated terror as he stared up at the giant screen. Beside him, Ashley began to hyperventilate, grabbing his sleeve and stammering, "Turn it off! Michael, turn it off! It’s a deepfake! It’s fake!"
"It’s not fake, Ashley," a calm, clear voice echoed through the ballroom’s surround-sound speaker system.
The murmurs in the room died down instantly. Every head turned toward the grand staircase at the back of the hall.
Slowly, step by measured step, I walked down the carpeted stairs. I wasn't wearing hospital gowns or thermal winter gear; I wore an exquisite, custom-tailored crimson evening gown that commanded the entire room. My posture was rigid, my head held high, and my eyes locked directly onto Michael’s terrified face.
The crowd parted before me in stunned silence, whispering in disbelief. Several older women crossed themselves, staring as if a ghost had literally risen from the grave.
Michael staggered backward, his knees buckling slightly as he clutched the edge of the mahogany podium. "C-Claire?" he choked out, his voice a pathetic squeak. "No... no, that’s impossible. You died... you fell..."
"Surprise, darling," I said smoothly, stopping ten feet away from the stage, my voice carrying effortlessly across the silent hall. "You forgot one fundamental rule of business, Michael: always verify your assets before you cash out."
Before Michael could lunge off the stage or Ashley could bolt toward the service exit, the heavy double doors of the ballroom burst open with a resounding bang.
Half a dozen federal marshals and local homicide detectives poured into the room, led by Detective Vance. Their boots clicked sharply against the marble floor as they swarmed the stage.
"Michael Carter and Ashley Sinclair," Detective Vance’s authoritative voice rang out, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for premeditated attempted murder, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, corporate embezzlement, and tampering with federal evidence."
"This is a setup! We demand our lawyer!" Ashley screamed, thrashing wildly as federal agents forced her hands behind her back and snapped the cuffs shut with a sharp, metallic click.
Michael didn't fight back. He simply collapsed against the podium, staring at me with hollow, defeated eyes as the cold steel bracelets locked around his wrists. As the officers hauled him past me toward the exit, he whispered hoarsely, "How... how did you survive?"

I leaned in close, my voice dropping to a whisper meant for him alone. "Because hell was too cold, Michael. And I had a son waiting for me on the other side."
