Chapter 3 - The Raid on Apex Tower**

The sleek, glass-and-steel monolith of Apex Global Logistics corporate headquarters sat majestically in downtown Chicago, glowing with cold architectural indifference against the midnight sky. By 2:30 a.m., that cold indifference was shattered by the flashing red and blue lights of a dozen federal and state patrol vehicles.

I sat in the front passenger seat of Detective Miller’s unmarked cruiser as we pulled up to the main entrance. A federal task force, accompanied by armed U.S. Marshals, had already secured the perimeter.

According to the secure digital packets Clara had hidden in our home server, Vance’s illegal trafficking network spanned six states, generating over fifty million dollars annually in illicit contraband revenue. My brother Derek and my mother Teresa had been recruited by Vance’s local fixers two years ago when Derek’s gambling debts spiraled out of control. They traded family loyalty for cash, turning our home into a surveillance outpost to monitor Clara when she began asking uncomfortable questions about Derek’s sudden influx of luxury cars and unexplained wealth.

As we walked through the glass revolving doors into the grand marble lobby, security guards stood with their hands raised against the wall while federal agents boxed up server towers and digital archives.

On the executive elevator ride up to the forty-second floor, the digital display climbed silently. With every floor we passed, the heavy weight of the last three days began to lift, replaced by a cold, burning hunger for justice.

When the elevator doors slid open on the penthouse level, Arthur Vance was standing behind his massive mahogany desk. He wasn't wearing his usual immaculate designer suit; his tie was loosened, his hair was slightly disheveled, and his hand hovered nervously over a heavy paper shredder that was currently chewing up confidential tax documents.

Two armed federal agents flanked him instantly, pressing him against the walnut bookshelves before he could reach a panic button.

“You can’t do this!” Vance snarled, struggling against the cuffs as agents forced his wrists behind his back. “I have federal judges in my pocket! I’ve funded political campaigns that would crush local cops like bugs!”

Detective Miller stepped forward, holding up a federal warrant signed by a U.S. District Judge less than twenty minutes prior.

“Mr. Vance, you are under arrest for federal racketeering, corporate espionage, conspiracy to commit murder, and interstate trafficking,” Miller recited crisply, her voice echoing off the high ceiling. “Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

Vance’s eyes darted across the room until they locked onto mine. His expression shifted from furious defiance to a desperate, pathetic plea.

“Alex!” Vance hissed, his voice dropping into a frantic whisper as agents hauled him toward the elevators. “Think about your daughter! Think about your future! If you destroy Apex, the entire regional economy collapses! We can make a deal—name your price, ten million, twenty million, just wipe those drives!”

I walked slowly across the plush carpet until I stood right in front of him, looking down into the eyes of the man who had ordered my wife’s murder under the guise of corporate compliance.

“You killed the wrong person, Arthur,” I said quietly. “And you picked the wrong family to cross.”

May you like

As federal agents dragged Vance out of his own penthouse, I pulled the green silk scarf—the one I had bought for Clara three days ago—out of my coat pocket, running my fingers softly across the smooth fabric.
