Chapter 4 - The Rescue and the Reckoning

"Uncle Derek!"

The tiny, tear-streaked cry pierced the chaos. Derek instantly dropped to one knee, abandoning Travis entirely, and turned his full, gentle attention toward the sofa.

"I’m right here, buddy," Derek murmured, his voice softening into the tender, protective tone of an uncle who would tear the world apart for his nephew. He carefully reached out, his massive hands moving with practiced gentleness, and scooped Noah into his arms, pulling the sobbing four-year-old tightly against his chest. "I’ve got you, Noah. You're safe now. Uncle Derek is here."

Noah buried his face deep into the crook of Derek’s neck, clutching the fabric of his shirt with his working hand while whimpering in pain from his injured arm. "My arm hurts, Uncle Derek… Travis hit me because I dropped his soda."

On the floor nearby, Travis finally managed to drag himself up onto his elbows, coughing violently and clutching his bruised ribs. Blood trickled from a small cut on his lip where he had bitten himself during the fall. His eyes widened with drunken panic as he realized who was holding the boy.

"You're… you're that redneck uncle," Travis choked out, glaring up at Derek with a mixture of fear and cowardly bravado. "You can't come into this house! This is private property! I’m calling Lena, I’m calling the cops, you broke my table—"

Derek slowly stood up, cradling Noah safely in one arm, and turned his cold, dead-eyed stare down at Travis. The sheer menace radiating from his posture made Travis scramble backward on his hands and knees until his back hit the living room wall.

"You laid a hand on a four-year-old child," Derek said, his voice chillingly quiet. "You threatened to break his other arm. You are lucky the police are going to get here before I finish what I started in this room."

Right on cue, the shrill, deafening wail of police sirens echoed loudly down our suburban street. A second later, blue and red strobe lights flashed wildly through our living room windows, painting the walls in frantic crimson and sapphire flashes. Heavy footsteps pounded up our front porch steps, and the front door burst open as two local police officers rushed into the house with their tasers drawn.

"Police! Drop whatever you're holding—hands where we can see them!" the lead officer shouted, scanning the chaotic scene: Derek holding a sobbing child, the shattered coffee table, the wooden baseball bat lying on the floor, and Travis whimpering against the baseboard.

Derek raised his free hand immediately, keeping his other arm securely wrapped around Noah. "I'm the boy's uncle. He called his dad, his dad called me, and I live five minutes away. That man right there assaulted my four-year-old nephew with a baseball bat."

Travis immediately burst into a theatrical, pathetic display of tears, pointing a shaking finger at Derek. "He broke in! He's crazy! He attacked me out of nowhere!" he wailed, playing the victim with practiced ease.

The second officer moved forward to handcuff Travis, but before he could secure the cuffs, the front door swung open again. Lena, my wife—or rather, the woman who was supposed to be my wife—rushed into the house, her face flushed, carrying her grocery bags from a local supermarket.

"What is going on here?!" Lena shrieked, dropping her bags onto the floor as she saw the police officers, the broken glass, and Derek holding Noah. "Travis! Oh my god, what happened to you?"
