Chapter 4 - The Federal Subpoena**

The morning headlines didn't just shock the Chicago business community—they sent a seismic shockwave across Wall Street.

The financial news networks broadcasted live helicopter footage of federal marshals carrying boxes of physical ledgers and digital server racks out of the Whitmore corporate headquarters. Conrad Whitmore had suffered a mild cardiac arrest late last night after federal agents served him with a personal indictment for covering up interstate insider trading linked to the aborted Vanguard merger. Grant, trapped in a nightmare of his own making, had been deserted by Sloane the moment she realized her fake pregnancy scheme had triggered a federal grand jury investigation into wire fraud and corporate espionage.
I sat comfortably on the terrace of my penthouse, sipping a cup of freshly brewed artisan coffee while reviewing the portfolio of assets that now legally belonged to me. The twenty-eight million dollar settlement had cleared into my accounts before the freeze orders hit the banking sector, completely insulated by ironclad trust structures that even federal prosecutors could not touch. Combined with the independent real estate holdings I had secured prior to the fallout, I was no longer just a wealthy ex-wife; I was an independent financial power player with absolute autonomy.
My private secretary stepped out onto the terrace, holding a sleek silver tablet.
“Mr. Grant Whitmore is in the downstairs lobby, Ms. Claire,” she reported evenly. “He managed to evade the reporters camped outside by taking the freight elevator. He’s demanding a face-to-face meeting. Security is holding him at the gate, but he says he won't leave until you speak with him.”
I took a slow sip of my coffee, feeling the warm liquid soothe my throat. “Send him up. But only to the terrace. I don't want his desperation tracking dirt across my marble floors.”
Ten minutes later, the glass terrace doors slid open. Grant stumbled out into the morning sunlight, looking like a ghost of the man who had sat across from me in the boardroom just forty-eight hours ago. His tailored Brioni suit was rumpled and stained with coffee, his dark hair uncombed, and his eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep and sheer panic. He looked smaller, older, and utterly defeated.
“Claire,” he breathed out, taking a desperate step toward me before stopping as my private security guard rested a heavy hand on his shoulder. “Please... you have to help me. The company accounts are frozen. Dad is in the hospital. The board is trying to pin the entire Vanguard conspiracy on me, and Sloane has vanished with whatever cash she could scrape together before the federal asset forfeiture order hit her accounts.”
I didn't stand up. I simply crossed one leg over the other, resting my chin in my hand as I looked up at him with cold, clinical indifference.
“And why, exactly, should I lift a single finger to save you, Grant?” I asked softly.
Grant fell to his knees on the stone patio, his hands trembling as he reached out toward my chair. “Because we were married for eight years! Because I loved you once! Claire, I made mistakes—horrible mistakes—but you can end this nightmare with a single phone call to your legal team. You have the leverage. You can clear my name.”
“Clear your name?” I laughed—a crisp, cold sound that held zero humor. “Grant, you spent years convincing me that I was broken because I couldn't give you children. You watched your family humiliate me, isolate me, and discard me like trash the second another woman offered you an heir. And the irony of it all? Those twins aren't even yours. You traded a loyal wife for a con artist’s bastard children, and you signed away your entire empire to do it.”
Grant buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking with ragged, humiliating sobs. “I was a fool,” he wept. “I lost everything.”
May you like
“No, Grant,” I said, standing up slowly and looking down at him with absolute finality. “You didn't lose everything. You just finally got exactly what you deserved.”
