Chapter 5 - A New Horizon**

Six months later, the golden autumn sunshine of California bathed the rolling hills of the Napa Valley in a warm, amber glow.

I stood on the expansive stone terrace of a private mountainside estate, looking out over acres of lush, perfectly manicured vineyards. The air smelled of crushed grapes, eucalyptus, and absolute freedom.

The fallout from the Apex Biotech collapse had been swift and absolute. Within three weeks of the patent reversion, the company had entered Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation. David Sterling and his venture capital firm had successfully sued Tristan for fraudulent misrepresentation, freezing his personal bank accounts, seizing his luxury vehicles, and forcing him out of the tech industry entirely. Last I heard, he was working as a mid-level sales representative for a medical supply distributor in rural Indiana, trying to pay off a mountain of legal debt under an assumed name. Tessa had resigned in disgrace two days after the scandal broke and moved back home to her parents in Ohio.

As for me?

The patents that Tristan had tried to steal were now the crown jewel of my new, fully independent research corporation: Hastings Bio-Innovations. We had secured fifty million dollars in clean, ethical venture capital from institutional partners who valued scientific integrity over corporate showmanship, and our Phase Three clinical trials for synthetic antibody therapies were currently showing miraculous results.

Footsteps echoed softly behind me on the stone patio, followed by the familiar, comforting warmth of arms wrapping gently around my waist.

Julian Vance—not related to my ex-fiancé, thankfully, but rather the brilliant lead immunologist I had hired to help co-manage Hastings Bio-Innovations—rested his chin lightly on my shoulder, looking out at the magnificent vineyard horizon with me.

“You’ve been standing out here staring at the vines for twenty minutes,” Julian murmured, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to my temple. “Are you sure you don't want to come inside? The investors are waiting for the toast.”

I turned in his embrace, wrapping my arms around his neck and looking up into his kind, intelligent, and completely sincere eyes.

“I’m right where I want to be,” I whispered, smiling.

Julian smiled back, his hand gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind my ear. “What are you thinking about?”

I looked out past the terrace railing, watching the sun dip slowly below the horizon, painting the California sky in brilliant shades of gold, violet, and rose.

“Just thinking about how heavy boxes are when you carry them for the wrong person,” I replied, my voice light, clear, and completely unburdened. “And how wonderful it feels to finally build a future where every single brick belongs to you.”
