Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

The whispers in the grand ballroom instantly erupted into a deafening roar of shock, cameras flashing furiously as the media captured every single second of the unfolding disaster.
Lead federal investigator Agent Miller stepped forward, flashing a gold badge directly in front of Marcus’s pale, shaking face. "Marcus Sterling, you are hereby placed under arrest for corporate wire fraud, embezzlement of Vanguard subsidiary funds, and submitting falsified financial statements to secure illegal bridge loans."
"This is insane! You can't do this! I demand to speak to the Vanguard chairman!" Marcus shrieked hysterically, thrashing backward as the federal marshals grabbed his arms and slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists. "Chloe! Chloe, please! Tell them! Tell them this is all a misunderstanding! We’re husband and wife!"
Chloe remained standing at the podium, her expression as cold, immovable, and unbothered as carved marble. She looked down at her wretched, disgraced ex-husband with quiet, profound pity.
"We were never equals, Marcus, and as of this morning, we are certainly no longer married," Chloe said into the microphone, her voice carrying an absolute authority that silenced the entire room. "You spent four years treating loyalty like weakness, exploiting someone you thought was a penniless nobody, and building an entire corporate empire on a house of cards funded by Vanguard debt. And today, I simply pulled the bottom card."
Veronica let out a shrill, panicked scream, dropping her designer handbag onto the marble floor as she realized she was now inextricably linked to a ruined, bankrupt criminal facing federal prison time. "Marcus! You said you were a multimillionaire! You said you owned everything!" she wailed, shoving him away violently before sprinting toward the exit through the parting crowd of elites.
Marcus glared at Chloe with pure, unadulterated venom as the marshals dragged him toward the double doors. "You ruined me! You ungrateful bitch! You’ll pay for this!"
"Take him away," Chloe commanded quietly.
The heavy doors closed behind him, cutting off his frantic, desperate screams. The glittering elite of Seattle stood in stunned, reverent silence, staring at the young woman on the stage with a mixture of awe and absolute terror. They finally understood who truly held the reins of power in this city.
Following the gala, Chloe retreated to the private VIP penthouse lounge at the top of Vanguard Tower, looking out over the glittering sea of city lights stretching out beneath her feet.
Arthur walked in quietly, placing a leather-bound folder on the mahogany desk beside her. "The liquidation of Sterling Global Holdings is complete, Madame Chairman. Their corporate headquarters have been seized, their assets absorbed into Vanguard holdings, and Marcus’s fraudulent accounts have been frozen by the federal prosecutor’s office. He is facing up to twenty years in federal prison."

Chloe didn't smile with malicious glee. She felt only the clean, refreshing clarity of absolute justice. She had survived the fire, shed the dead weight of a toxic betrayal, and reclaimed her birthright as the undisputed queen of the financial world.
