Chapter 5 - Landing in the Storm

The massive wide-body aircraft touched down on the tarmac of Frankfurt International Airport with a heavy, muted thud that reverberated through the landing gear. Outside the thick cabin windows, a dense, gray European mist hung heavily over the concrete runways, illuminated only by the harsh, yellow glare of high-intensity floodlights.

The fasten-seatbelt signs chimed a cheerful, melodic tone that felt entirely out of place given the electrical storm of corporate and criminal warfare about to erupt outside.

Up in the first-class cabin, the sliding doors were pulled back.

Yuna Baek was the first person up, her designer coat clutched tightly around her shoulders, her face flushed with lingering indignation. She tossed a venomous, triumphant glare toward the private suite as she marched down the aisle toward the exit, clearly believing that whatever trouble awaited her at her destination, her family's wealth and status would shield her from any real consequences.

She had no idea what was waiting for her at the end of the jet bridge.

Jin-ho and I remained seated inside the suite until the rest of the first-class cabin had completely cleared out. The flight attendants stood near the forward galley, practically vibrating with nervous sweat, refusing to make eye contact as we finally stepped out into the aisle.

When we reached the aircraft door and stepped out onto the metal platform of the jet bridge, the reality of Jin-ho Yoon's empire hit instantly.

Waiting at the end of the long, glass-enclosed tunnel wasn't just the standard airport ground crew. Four men in bespoke dark suits—local European syndicate enforcers—stood at rigid attention alongside two high-ranking German federal investigators holding official seizure warrants.

A few yards ahead of them, Yuna Baek had just been stopped by airport security and two federal agents. Her designer luggage was already sitting open on a steel inspection table, its contents being ruthlessly searched.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Yuna shrieked, her voice echoing shrilly down the metal tunnel. "Do you know who my father is?! You cannot search my bags! This is an outrage! I demand to speak to—"

She stopped dead in her tracks as she turned around and saw Jin-ho and me walking gracefully down the jet bridge behind her.

Jin-ho walked with his hands casually tucked into the pockets of his dark trousers, his black wool coat sweeping behind him like a cape. I walked beside him, my head held high, my scuffed leather tote bag slung securely over my shoulder. We looked less like weary travelers and more like an execution squad stepping onto a battlefield.

"Yuna," Jin-ho said smoothly, stopping a few feet away from her frantic, trembling form.

"Jin! Thank god!" Yuna cried out, rushing forward, completely missing the armed federal agents blocking her path. "These fools—they're searching my belongings, they're accusing my family of financial crimes—tell them who I am, tell them to let me go—"

Jin-ho looked down at her with an expression of profound, chilling indifference.

"I told you on the plane, Yuna," Jin-ho said softly, his voice cutting cleanly through her hysterics. "Disrespecting the table has a high tax. Your father tried to pick my pocket while my wife was securing our borders. Consequently, Baek Logistics has just been liquidated by the international banking cartel."

Yuna’s face drained of every last trace of color. Her knees buckled slightly, and she had to grab the metal railing of the jet bridge to keep from collapsing onto the floor. "Liquidated... no... that's impossible... my father is—"

"Your father is currently answering questions in a secure holding cell in Seoul," Jin-ho interrupted smoothly. "And you are currently an unverified traveler under federal investigation for corporate conspiracy."

One of the German federal investigators stepped forward, holding a pair of polished steel handcuffs. "Miss Baek, you need to come with us for questioning."

Yuna let out a choked, desperate sob, her eyes darting wildly between the federal agents, the stone-faced enforcers, and finally landing on me. For the first time, all the arrogance, all the designer labels, and all the elite posturing were entirely stripped away, leaving behind only a terrified, broken girl who had picked a fight with the wrong people on an airplane.

I didn't smile. I didn't gloat. I simply looked at her with the quiet, unyielding detachment of someone who had survived thirty-six hours of hell and come out the other side wearing armor she had forged herself.

"Have a safe flight back to reality, Yuna," I said softly.

May you like

Jin-ho wrapped a warm, heavy arm around my waist, pulling me close against his side as we walked past the bewildered security guards, past the weeping girl in the designer coat, and out toward the private tarmac where a sleek black helicopter was waiting to fly us to the heart of Europe.

The doors closed behind us, cutting off the noise of the terminal, leaving us alone in the quiet hum of the rotor blades as we lifted off into the grey, stormy sky—together, untouchable, and completely victorious.
