Chapter 4 - The Kitchen Floor Battle and the Desperate Gambit

Time seemed to slow down to an agonizing crawl. As the tactical operative’s finger began to squeeze the trigger of his assault rifle, primal survival instinct overrode every shred of fear in Ryan’s mind. With a ferocious roar, Ryan hurled the heavy cast-iron skillet directly at the gunman’s face.
The skillet struck the operative square in the tactical helmet with a deafening metallic clang, throwing his aim off just enough. The rifle discharged, blowing a massive, jagged hole through the kitchen drywall and showering the room with plaster dust.
“Run!” Ryan screamed at the top of his lungs, grabbing Caroline and Leo and shoving them violently toward the pantry.
Chaos erupted in the kitchen. The two remaining tactical guards rushed forward, opening fire and shattering glassware, cabinets, and appliances into a storm of shrapnel. Ryan grabbed a heavy wooden kitchen chair and smashed it across the countertop, shattering the wood and using the jagged leg to jab fiercely at the nearest operative who lunged over the island.
Caroline didn't run. Driven by a mother’s primal fury, she grabbed the heavy brass fire extinguisher mounted beside the pantry door, pulled the safety pin, and unleashed a blinding, high-pressure cloud of white chemical powder directly into Viktor Vance’s face.
Viktor shrieked in agony, stumbling backward and clawing at his burning eyes as the choking white fog filled the kitchen.
“Down here! Through the utility hatch!” Caroline screamed, ripping open the hidden floor panel behind the pantry shelving—the secret entrance leading directly into the concrete foundation tunnels where little Maya was hidden.
Ryan didn't hesitate. He grabbed Leo, lifted him down into the dark, damp subterranean corridor, and turned to pull Caroline in behind them just as one of the guards recovered from the blinding foam and fired a burst of submachine gun rounds that splintered the edge of the hatch door inches from Ryan’s skull.
Dropping the hatch shut with a deafening slam, Ryan threw the heavy steel slide-bolt lock just as heavy boots pounded on the floor above them.
Pitch blackness enveloped them, broken only by the dim beam of a pocket flashlight Ryan desperately clicked on with shaking fingers. The air down here smelled of damp earth, rust, and old concrete.
“Dad! Over here!” Leo whispered, tugging on Ryan’s sleeve.
At the end of the narrow concrete culvert, curled up in a corner shivering under a dirty wool blanket, sat a tiny, frail girl with wide, terrified eyes. It was Maya. She looked up at them, too weak to speak, but she reached out a small hand toward Caroline.
“We got you, sweetie. You’re safe. I promise you are safe,” Caroline sobbed, dropping to her knees and gathering the little girl into her arms.
Above them, the heavy sound of sledgehammers began to pound against the wooden floorboards of the kitchen. Viktor Vance’s men were trying to smash their way down into the tunnels. They had minutes—maybe seconds—before the ceiling caved in on top of them.
“There’s no way out this way, Caroline. It’s a dead end,” Ryan panted, shining his flashlight down the concrete pipe and seeing a solid brick wall blocking the far end.
“No, it’s not,” Caroline said fiercely, a sudden spark of absolute resolve flashing in her eyes. She reached out and pressed a hidden iron brick embedded in the foundation wall—a secret emergency override she had memorized from Viktor’s encrypted files months ago.
With a deep, pneumatic hiss, the solid brick wall slowly slid backward into the earth, revealing a brightly lit federal transit tunnel directly linked to the local state police precinct two blocks away.
Stepping through the opening into the safe tunnel, Ryan pulled out his cell phone, hitting speed dial for the FBI field office with steady, unyielding hands.
“Federal Bureau of Investigation. State your emergency,” a calm voice answered on the other end.

“My name is Ryan Mitchell,” Ryan said, looking down at his weeping wife, his terrified son, and the rescued little girl wrapped safely in their arms. “I am calling to report a major human trafficking syndicate operating out of Manhattan... and I have Viktor Vance trapped in my kitchen.”
