Chapter 3 - The Collapse in the Ballroom

Back inside the grand ballroom, the festive atmosphere had instantly evaporated into an atmosphere of suffocating panic.
As Emma stared down at the forensic report, the color drained entirely from her face, leaving her skin the tone of wet ash. Her trembling fingers dropped the photographs onto the polished wooden floor, where they fluttered open for surrounding guests to see. The numbers on the bank transfer didn't lie; the undeniable proof of her active collusion in the forgery stared her in the face.
“Richard... what is this?” Emma stammered, her voice cracking as she turned desperately toward her new father-in-law. “Is this true? Did you use me to forge my father’s signature?”
Richard’s polished, grandfatherly facade cracked instantly, revealing the desperate, cornered shark underneath. He slapped the microphone out of her hand, the feedback screeching horribly through the sound system.
“Shut your mouth, you ungrateful little fool!” Richard roared, his face contorting with rage. He grabbed Emma roughly by the wrist, the illusion of paternal warmth vanishing in a heartbeat. “If you hadn't botched the key handover and let your father suspect anything, the deed would have been legally transferred by now! My company is going under, and you were supposed to be our golden ticket out of bankruptcy!”
The surrounding guests gasped, stepping backward in horror as the ugly, violent truth spilled out into the open. Cameras flashed from smartphones in the crowd, recording every frantic second of their exposure.
Blake panicked, looking wildly toward the exits. “Dad, we need to get out of here right now. The accounts are frozen. The police—look at the doors!”
Heavy footsteps echoed across the marble foyer as uniformed local police officers, accompanied by federal financial crime investigators, swarmed through the grand entrance. Their badges gleamed under the chandeliers as they fanned out across the room, completely cutting off all avenues of escape.
“Richard Vale and Blake Vale?” the lead detective called out, his voice ringing with absolute authority. “You are under placement of arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, forgery, and conspiracy to commit corporate fraud. Put your hands behind your back.”
“You can’t touch me! Do you know who I am?!” Richard shrieked, lunging backward as the steel handcuffs snapped securely around his wrists. “This is a civil matter! This is a family dispute!”

“It stopped being a family dispute the moment you laundered stolen funds through a forged real estate transaction,” the detective retorted coldly, shoving Richard against the pillar.
Emma stood paralyzed in the center of the stage, still wearing her pristine designer wedding dress, watching her brand-new husband and father-in-law being dragged away in chains. She looked around the ballroom for a friendly face, but the guests who had applauded her moments before now stared at her with undisguised contempt and pity. She was completely alone, abandoned by the very people she had traded her real family to impress.
